so what's it about. give me like a 2-3 sentence summary.

I feel it's an underdog story at its heart. Low-tech fantasy setting with its own form of magic and cool fantasy races that don't like humans very much at the beginning. The main character Tavi finds out he's going to have to use his wits to save more than just his own skin from bullies. He, with help from his friends/allies has to save much, much more.

I sound like an advertisement. @_@

But really, his other series got a short-lived TV series. I heard he liked it but there was a lot of complaints from the fans for it not being faithful to the books. So this may be a blessing.

I love this series so much. I feel like it'd have to be at least a miniseries, though, rather than a movie; too much happens in it to cram into two hours.

This. Hell, I'm not one for fanfiction, but this is the first fandom I've been in that I'm foaming at the mouth for fic. And lo and behold, it just had to be for a tiny/nonexistant fandom.

But yeesh, surprised that I've never stumbled upon any sort of fics about Tavi's childhood. That there is prime fic bait and I've found absolutely zilch in the scattering of CA fanfiction on FFN and Livejournal.

I... started reading the first book to this and put it down in frustration with Butcher's female characters. I found out later I was not the first person this had happened to. That said, that never got in the way of a Hollywood adaptation- I wish you luck, OP!

I'm not a huge fan of Amara - okay, I find her drastically annoying - but Codex Alera does have some great female characters in it, particularly Kitai and Invidia Aquitaine. But to each their own. :)

I hate the first book. But I love the hell out of the others. I tend to rec this series to people with the caveat that the first book (and a few bits of the second) simply have to be slogged through, but you are then rewarded by the rest of the series, which I utterly adore.

(The characters get so much better.)
