Reading, and drawing I guess. I don't draw very often and I'm not good enough to make money on it. And I have only mediocre grammatical skills so being an editor or something is also out.

I used to have interests in my teens, like coding and web design and others but my family shot me down on all of it so I never went anywhere with it.

Can you find some open-source web projects to volunteer with while you're working on the side?

I've never thought of that. It'll have to be something I look into! I've never thought about it because I dropped it all before I got really any good.(like I know html, css and a bit of PHP but I doubt that would help anyone out.)

Hey, you never know until you poke your head into it, right? There are lots of html, css and php tutorials online, lots of free web hosts too. Get a domain, build your own website(s), and start working on a portfolio. It doesn't even have to be web design; as long as you're learning new skills/improving old skills and building a marketable portfolio I think it's time well spent.

You could try joining [site community profile] dw_dev_training - they would love to have you, and I've heard they're really good at supporting new volunteers.

Why did your family shoot down the web design/coding? Have you considered going back to it now if that's what interests you?

They thought it is useless. They only think things like engineering or corporate stuff has any worth. Which is funny seeing as they moved me around from schools so often that I never got any sort of foundation in math to learn anything to do with those sorts of jobs. I can hardly even do multiplication!
And I have thought of picking it back up, and I have somewhat but it's changed so much from when I was into it that it is really daunting.

AYRT

Well Web design is kind of like engineering... of a sort. Anyway, if it's something you're still interested in I'd start small and try to build on what you previously had learned...

Web design/coding can be so lucrative, though.

It may seem daunting at the moment, but if it's something you dug, you can totally get back into it. Some of the fine points have changed, but the basics have remained the same.
