I've done this myself (even had one up as recently as a few days ago... cough). Always gives me warm fuzzies to get people replying saying 'yay a such-and-such secret!'. Heck, I think I've found one or two series thanks to people doing this.

Sometimes I think I ought to do that, really. My most recent secret had a decent discussion on it? I'm getting better at it, and pulling people out of the woodwork might do well for people who don't look at the icons of commenters and read comments.

I admit I've done this once or twice myself, and it's even worked! (Love it when that happens.)

And honestly, I don't mind this because sometimes I too hear about something on here then want to check it out. New fandoms are great.

Sticky Notes!

Tbh OP, I like seeing different fandoms instead of the same old bigger, well known fandoms that get secrets posted all the time.

OH MY GOD. MS Sticky Notes secret. I thought I was the only one who loves the crap out of Sticky Notes. Pink, teal, yellow, etc. The best and cutest cast ♥


I do this sometimes also. Aside from signal boosting elsewhere, secrets are like a covert, "Hey, you guys need to read/play/watch this :U"
Considering all the things that were recced or just got me to try some media via secrets, it's not a shabby plan.

Dude. I work with computers at work, and my second monitor is covered with sticky notes. We all love them. XD

I used to do this too, until I realized that most people don't read secrets that aren't about things they already know about.

So long as you don't spam the boards with a ton of boring secrets that are nothing but thinly veiled "pay attention to my fandom" pleas (K-pop poster, I'm looking at you) it's cool.

I'm guilty of this too... Also guilty of mentioning my fandoms whenever I don't think I'll look total idiot, or an ass.

It's a good way of doing it, I think! I mean, I go on F!S everyday and I know it's gotten other people into fandoms. It happens.

I think this would work better back in LiveJournal, unfortunately. Seems like here in dreamwidth people simply ignore stuff from fandoms they don't know. <:(

Do you participate in Yuletide, OP? There's a canon rec post every year to get people into new (to them) obscure canons; I know I've picked up more than a couple either from that, or from the requests from the person I'm writing for sparking an interest.

(Not that submitting secrets isn't a decent way to fish for interest, small-fandom fests are just another method, and one that generally comes with at least a segment of the participating group being particularly open to new fandoms.)

I don't make up secrets, but I purposefully will make a secret RIGHT AWAY when I have one for a fandom that I love but doesn't get talked about much. and I like discovering new stuff, so you might get me into something sometime! XD (Although moooost of my fandom activity is limited to RP these days.)

It's communities like this one that got me interested in a couple shows I ended up really liking so you never know- your secrets might intrigue potential fans.
