It was my impression that he and his partner agreed to try polyamory and it didn't work out. That's a bit different than just deciding to date someone else despite being in a longterm relationship.

My impression was that they were in a theoretically poly relationship, but neither of them had had another partner in a long time, and there was a shitton of other stuff going on that made this one the breaking point. And the fact that he (Billy) was still oversharing all over LJ where most of his readers are fans makes me feel so bad for his husband. I mean, I know a lot of celebrities are on Twitter, but I'm uncomfortable hearing that much about the breakup of someone I don't know.

Yes, that is pretty much the impression I got too.

But I also think (having him on my flist for many years now) that there were other pressures--his husband's work and friends, starting on T, health and money issues, passions dying, sexual interest and drives changing, a whole bunch of things that shake up life.

If anything, to me, OP sounds like they took a single glance and are now bent out of shape that their favourite author is actually human, but I completely agree that a poly relationship not working out =/= cheating.
