I've had a stylist suggest this to me before, but I have a few misgivings (it really needs research)...for one thing, my hair grows really fast and the roots would just come in puffy, wouldn't they? Also, I'm not sure which treatment is safe. (When they first came out I heard they used formaldehyde? D:)

Then there's the fact that I have anxiety attacks and I couldn't sit at the stylists office for four hours (if that is how long they take.) Then there's the fact that I would have to find someone who I trust will do it right (I live in a huge urban city with bajillions of stylists and who knows which one is the good one? I haven't found my perfect stylist yet -- been trying a different one each time).

And finally and most importantly...it's expensive and I want to save my extra money for fannish things!!! XD It's like..."hmmm, $100 dollars on my hair...or $200 dollars worth of books/toys/DVDs. WELP, NO CONTEST."

I have been getting my hair straightened since I was 9, well at first only the fringe, so I have experience with this.
There are both products with formaldehyde and without, I did the one with it once and it wasn't worth it the risk, since it didn't look much better than the one without.

Four hours sounds about right (actually it has taken longer sometimes, if the place is full), I'm shy and I hate the kind of talks people tend to have at the hairdresser's so I bring a book, I dunno if that would work for you but it helps tuning the other customers out.

And yup, expensive, nothing to say there :(

There are also Keratine shocks (err I guess they are called like that? English is not my first language so I'm trying hard to make this understandable xD) that help a lot to "repair" the hair, and may be a cheaper option. Cons, the first time you wash after the treatment is awful, or at least it was for me, the hair was kind of matted and it took me a long time to fully wash it and de tangle that mess (but don't worry, by the next wash it was great!)

Oh, and regarding which place to go, I live in a big city also and I looked it up on the Internet. Most hairdressers would offer this, but is preferable to go only to the ones that advertise this in particular, like they are known for this.

Sorry for the testament ;) and my condolences for the Hermione hair, I freaking hate mine u.u

I did not have a great experience with the keratin thing. I got one done at Aveda, and to me, it had no effect whatsoever on my hair. This may be because I refuse to blowdry/flatiron it, though.
