My favorite piece of classical music is Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland.

I also like William Bolcom's Graceful Ghost Rag.

A little random but here you go.

Thank you for the Beethoven 7 link. The way the symphony is represented visually is very neat!

Prokofiev, particularly the ballet music for Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella.

Tchaikovsky- you've probably already heard the Nutcracker Suite a million times and some of Swan Lake, but have you heard The Queen of Spades or my personal favorite opera, Eugene Onegin?

Khachaturian's Masquerade Suite and Gayneh Suites are both gorgeous, but I think his best has to be the Spartacus pas de deux, bar none.

Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazada was my favorite piece when I was in middle school, which should give you an idea of how emotional it is.

...I could go on, is this helpful?

Re: Classical Music recs

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-10 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
It is to me. I lost all my classical music when my old laptop died and I hardly memorized what I liked and Khachaturian's Spartacus pas de deux was one I was trying to remember.

So thanks!

You love Eugene Onegin and Scheherezada *__*

You can't even imagine how happy and proud it makes me as a Russian classical music lover. :D

Also, since I see no one's mentioned them- Edvard Grieg's In The Hall of the Mountain King (and Peer Gynt in general) and Antonin Dvorak's Symphony no 9

Here's a 'remix' of Bach's Suite No.1 Prelude--you know, the cello piece you've heard in lots of trailers and stuff. It's pretty moving & awesome.

Fantasie Impromptu (cliche choice, I know): Chopin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvm2ZsRv3C8

Nocturne 9 Op 2: Chopin (really all of his nocturnes are beautiful, though)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvxS_bJ0yOU

Requiem Mass in D Minor: Mozart
(warning for being an hour long and also choral)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPlhKP0nZII&feature=related

Carmina Burana: Carl Orff
(you've probably heard the second song in this in movies! also warning for long and choral. can you tell I was in choir?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEllLECo4OM

Moonlight Sonata: Beethoven
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQVeaIHWWck

Really I'm fond of everything Beethoven and Chopin have made.

And also, I know I've recc'd so much choral stuff, and this was written a tiny bit more recently, but I have to say that this is probably the most beautiful, heartbreaking piece of music I have ever heard.

David's Lamentation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGqQ4E9ZHzA

Seriously, listen to that one. Do it.

Also, Eric Whitaker is always good value.

Seconding Requiem! However because the long length I recommend particularly listening to "Dies Irae" and Lacrimosa part of Requiem.

Mmm I like the way you think kasumi14.

Also I suggest that she listen to the (one? two? can't remember. it's very late) songs before Dies Irae because they're absolutely lovely.

Holst's Planets suite. Especially Jupiter and Uranus. :)

Re: Classical Music recs

You've probably heard these at least once, but I'm gonna rec them anyway. I have tons of classical music favorites, but since you asked specifically for music that brings out your emotions, I'm gonna go with that.

Secret Garden - Nocturne
Tan Dun - For the world
Claude Debussy - Clair de lun
Giacomo Puccini - O Mio Babbino Caro
Gheorghe Zamfir - The Lonely Shepard
Nino Rota - The Godfather Theme
Bach - Aria De La Suite Orchestre N° 3
Beethoven - Moonlight
Jenkins - Palladio I Allegretto
Saint-Saens - The Aquarium [This one sent chills down my spine the first time I heard it.]
Satie - Gymnopédia I [I don't know how to feel when I listen to it. It's both happy and melancholic at the same time.]

I hope you find something you like.

I've always been partial to Russians. Here is Rachmaninoff playing Piano Concerto no. 2 by Rachmaninoff himself. The audio quality is amazing for a recording made in 1929.
