Yeah, there's an inordinate amount of orphans among the Strawhats but there's no "poor me, my parents are dead/missing/abandoned me". It's very much that family is about who cares about you and you can always bring new people in. I love it. I mean, Luffy's grieved more over Ace and Sabo than his biological family because they MEANT more to him.

It's almost as though Oda's got a fixation on non-traditional families.

We've never actually seen Luffy react to the death of a biological family member, though. But I can't see him breaking down if Dragon died. He doesn't even know him, after all. But he might make a sad face if Garp dies.
