Don't get me wrong. I love magic. Give me a detective with psychic powers any day, and I have no problem whatsoever with it.

I just don't buy that they are a realistic depiction of actual schizophrenic behavior. And it's not. Not getting into it, but I have a lot of first hand exposure to actual schizophrenics, and their halucinations aren't their brains working out problems -- more the other way around. But that really doesn't make for good story telling.

I was okay with House too, because I didn't for a second think that his exploits were at all realistic.

My problem is the note at the end where it says "If you want to know more about this condition" like it was some kind of fucking PSA. No. Or maybe yes, I'd like to know more about that disorder, but not because it was presented so realistically!

Yeah, I get that the things the hallucinations are saying are just Daniel's working through the problem, and what "they" tell him are things he noticed in the back of his mind. But, yeah, I don't think that's what schizophrenia is.

AYRT, and agreed with both of you. As a point of curiosity - is schizophrenia his definite/only diagnosis on the show? Is their portrayal of his other main symptoms - paranoia, anxiety about crowds, etc - more accurate? What about the way it's basically an ironic and self-aware sort at paranoia, as opposed to the way the anxiety is more on a level of 'physically. can't.'?

But I still enjoy the show and the character, just tend to see him through the lens of 'enjoyably fucked-up' instead of 'accurate schizophrenic'.
