I'm sorry that happened to you. If it makes you feel any better the wording here is pretty familiar so there is a chance that in this case at least these idiots aren't idiots like that?

Thanks, but if anything it just adds to my 'tool kit' when it comes to talking about and dealing with this topic and often it's not malicious so much as it is ignorant. I imagine you're right that it's something similar here, at least in some places but when it's brought up with such negative connotations (i.e., "He had a sex change and cheated and sucks") then a degree of overlapping hostility is just to be expected, I suppose.
