I think you stopped being able to pretend to be a casual fan of Penn & Teller when you read fanfiction about Penn & Teller.

It's a bit bizarre thinking about people debating the proper way to characterize actual people. Of course, that's like the least of the inaccuracies, since Penn and Teller have a strictly work-oriented relationship and aren't even friends in real life.

Eh... their partnership is mostly a work relationship, but saying they're not friends in real life isn't strictly true. (Though that's a popular quote and widely circulated, so they've had to address and clarify that many times.)

Well, this rather implies they aren't really social off the clock together: Penn says we should compare their relationship not to a loveless marriage but to that of “two guys manning a 7/11 down the street. If they aren’t best buddies what do they care, as long as the coffee machine is working and the shelves are stacked? Teller and I work together every day, but socially we go out together maybe only once a year.”

Question: How would you characterize your relationship with Teller?

Penn Jillette: Business partners, I mean, the most important thing about our partnership is it's not based on cuddly love and affection. I mean, over 35 years, I mean, by many definitions he has to be my best friend. I mean, he's the person I talk to when my mom and dad died. He was there when my, you know, right after my children were born. He's all of those things but we're much more like two guys who own a dry cleaning business, you know, many of your show business partnerships start in love."

and later: "So he's become my best friend but in a very circuitous route through respect and through work."

That's why saying that "aren't really friends in real life" isn't precisely accurate, even if they only hang out once a year. They see and work with each other nearly every day for thirty years, and there's huge mutual respect and admiration. I guess it depends on how you define friendship, but... yeah, I think that's a friendship and a damn solid one, too. It just wasn't BFFs-at-first-sight.

Eh...It'd be a little closer to say that he's said that it wasn't 'instant' friendship like a lot of show partnerships are when they start, but that over time they've become best friends. [I think somewhere Penn's actually mentioned that Teller is his best friend? [Or implied it with mentioning that Teller was who he talked to when his parents past, or something along those lines.]]

Penn and Teller slash is something I've never considered (don't particuarly like them), but my first thought upon reading the secret was 'but Teller makes a better dominant than woobie'.

This....probably says a lot about me.
