Don't feel bad! I think a lot of us are like that. Fic is more accessible and doesn't have to have mass appeal so it's easier to find what you like.

And it's about the quality of what you're reading. Twilight is a book.

will people stop shitting on twilight? do you know how many junior or YA books there have been since forever? stop trashing that ONE BOOK that happened to capture youth culture for a relatively short period of time.

u mad bro

in all seriousness though: i think the argument against twilight has more to do with the damage it's done to perceptions of what constitutes healthy relationships on top of being a generally shittily written book which perpetuated 50 shades of grey.

i'll stop side-eyeing it when my otherwise intelligent 22 year old high school peers stop writing terrible love songs based on it.

oh whatever...it's just fantasy. young people think crazy ass shit about the world, and then guess what, they grow up and realize that things are actually different from what they imagined. books, movies etc have played a part in that since their conception. twilight isn't damaging anybody's idea of a healthy relationship unless they've never had one.

you pointed out in your initial comment that twilight is a junior/young adult book...

Seriously, wow. I think the absolute worst damage someone can do to how people view relationships is damaging people who don't know any better. Because it takes a lot more effort to change something you believe is right then learning new something altogether. Twilight has caused so much damage we probably haven't even seen the full effects of it yet.

For reals! Girls and young women (and probably old women, too) are stupid and need to be protected from dangerous ideas like the ones presented in Twilight. They should only be allowed to read books approved by a group of feminist (that believe exactly what I believe because I'm not like those stupid women).

Boys, on the other hand, can play all the violent video games they want since they're smart enough to tell fiction from reality.

Yes, because the likelihood of the situations, depicted in respective genres, happening IRL, and, as such the 'lessons' taught by them being taken as applicable IRL is exactly the same!

I mean, girls have romantic relationship just as often as boys get to hunt criminals, fight as a special OP in a hi-tech war and fight, say, aliens or zombies, right?

It's... not quite like that:

http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-ways-you-dont-realize-movies-are-controlling-your-brain/

They're talking about movies, so the visual stick more than books, but I think they explain the way media works with your brain very well in general.

No. It's a widely known example that I feel perfectly made my point.
