Because he was the one that put Shae into a life-threatening position in the first place, (bringing her to court against his father's wishes, keeping her when his father further said that he'd kill any whore Tyrion took up with, and Varys told him that he wouldn't lie about Shae if point-blank asked. Then when her only choice is to say what Cersei wants her to, and have sex with Tywin if she wants to get out of there alive, well, she decides to live.

It's understandable that with everything he just snaps, but it's still pretty shitty of him.

Yes, exactly. Shae was doing what she had to to stay alive, and Tyrion killed her for it. It was a shitty thing for him to do, no matter the provocation.

I also think people see it as a moral event horizon for him because he seems to see it that way himself. His character changes big-time after that, and not in a good way.

Hm, I'm always unhappy with calling something a moral event horizon until everything is said and done. There is still a possibility of change, even if someone screwed up big time. I'm pretty sure a lot of people called the whole "moral event horizon!" thing on Snape when he killed Dumbledore and look where that ended xD

But that's just soemthing I personaly dislike, I can see why people would call it that though at the point where the story is right now.

I know this discussion is old, but I just wanted to say that Tyrion seeing his actions as negative seems to me to be an indication that it's not a moral event horizon. If he were irredeemable I think he would see his actions as totally justified. The Tyrion of A Dance with Dragons is so self-loathing, not someone who seems to be reveling in evil.
