But she had absolutely NO power over what she said. She was nothing but a pawn, threatened with death if she didn't say the words they put in her mouth. She was a poor, sex worker with no family or connections. Her only connection was the man that the rest of the royal family was trying to kill. She did absolutely nothing in her own power to hurt Tyrion. Especially considering the fact that no matter what Tyrion's feelings were, she was still poor, famiyless and a sex worker. Whether or not her feelings were real, she would have been stupid to say they weren't.

I thought Tyrion was supposed to be fucking smart. What the fuck did he read all the books for? He knows nothing about how his own family runs things or about human self preservation.

I totally agree on the last bit. I like Tyrion as a character and enjoy his chapters but he's supposed to be this really smart clever guy and yet it seems like half the time he couldn't think himself out a paper bag when it comes to his family.

There are different kinds of 'smart' and 'clever' though - and a lot of people turn a blind eye towards their loved ones [though it's probably questionable how much the term applies here].

I'll admit, even with my relationship to my family as shitty as it is, I wouldn't want to admit/acknowledge that I'm related to murders/rapist/what have you.

The thing is in the books his wits are always talked about as being his strongest suit and honestly there aren't many instances I can think of where he actually pulls off something really clever. A lot of the times he gets himself in shitty situations because he doesn't seem to think things through, the biggest one being Shae and keeping her in the castle with him.

As for the family thing, are we talking admitting it to other people or to yourself? Tyrion had acknowledged that his father and sister were pretty downright brutal and conniving people, but every time they seemed to side swipe him despite how clever he was supposed to be.

I was just saying that perhaps that's what the deal with him having read all the books is - and even then, reading a ton of books =/= being completely and uttly awesomely clever. So, that could just be part of his character without actually being related [and, love it or hate it, having a rather large set of wits tends to be something a lot of people assume when someone's read a lot - so I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibilty that it was a rumor started because of that...But that could just be me.]

Either, really. That isn't something that really has much to do with being clever so much as just flat out not wanting to admit someone you're related to/love/supposed to love you is as bad as they really are - and it does happen in the real world, so I can imagine it would happen just as often, if not more so, in the world this series is set.

She had some power over what she said. I think it's pretty clear that she was aiming to hit him where it hurt with her words. She added far more venom and humiliation to that story then necessary and twisted up things that actually happened (like turning her pet name for him into a mockery of him) to make it sting even worse. I think it seemed very obvious that Shae manipulated him to her own ends and had no qualms about selling him out when she lost faith in him and his ability to provide for her. She may have even enjoyed after (in her mind) having to put up with having sex with a grotesque ugly man. Maybe the "giant of lannister" thing was a personal joke for her since the beginning. I don't think Shae was ever the "poor little whore" character you make her out to be. I think she was making the best out of her situation and I think Tyrion was an idiot for ever believing he was anything more than a useful tool/joke to her. He says as much to himself on a couple occasions, but still he tries to believe she might have some real loyalty and affection towards him.
