Why...do people like this character so much?

I mean, I can enjoy a complex and tragic character while still wanting him to ultimately burn in hell for being an awful person, but it seems like people want him to, I dunno, get better and live happily ever after or some shit.

If people are only watching the show then it hasn't gotten to that point yet and these scenes don't happen until the fifth book it sounds like. I'm only on the third so for now he's still pretty likeable.

It's unfortunate to hear that his character takes such a disgusting turn later on.

Yeah, for the first 3 books he is one of the (IMO, and plenty seem to agree with me) most sympathetic (relativley, anyway), funny, smart, and interesting POV characters. The event this secret refers to is at the very end of Book 3. It is a crime of passion and I really think many people could have gotten past it, but in Book 5 (he's not in 4) he went off the grimdark deep end. He did way more horrible things, which turned a lot of people off. On top of that, his POV just got way darker, more twisted and, to many, less interesting or entertaining.

OTOH, if people do still want him redeemed after ADWD (I'm torn on this issue), its mostly because they spent 3000 pages rooting for him. That's hard to let go.

...Who? Most the people here aren't saying much good about him, and I haven't seen much about *wanting* him to get better. The closest I've seen has been 'maybe he'll change for the better' - and that seems to come from the fact that the series seems to twist characters to hell and back than it does anything else.

He seems like a pretty popular character, from what I've seen in most ASOIAF discussions and articles. Enough so that I'm surprised he's actually so awful. But I could have gotten that wrong.

He's one of the most likable & reasonable characters in the show right now. I'm pretty surprised his character takes such a turn in the books because he seems pretty (comparatively) decent in the show.

It'll be pretty interesting to see what the show does with his character. His relationship with Shae in the show is more loving than in the book, and Shae is a bit of a better person with more of a history (like in the book when Tyrion finally awakens from nearly getting killed in the battle with Stannis the first thing Shae does is ask about her dresses and her jewels and when she'll be able to wear them again or something. I couldn't fucking stand Shae after that).

In the show Tyrion may not go as dark as he had in the book, especially since he is such a popular character.
