Re: Embarrassing; dental hygiene
(Anonymous) 2012-08-11 08:04 am (UTC)(link)My teeth are an absolute disaster. I was avoiding going to the dentist for the very same reason as you. I was afraid they'd treat me like my normal doctors (who shame me for very different reasons which is why I rarely go to the doctor anymore either because they don't listen BUT ANYWAY). However, I ended up finding a highly rated clinic that not only worked with the meager insurance I had, but also everyone has treated me very kindly and with a professional air. Even the dental hygienist that had to drill off the hard plaque that had crusted on several of my back teeth didn't even admonish me. She just showed me how to floss properly and how to brush properly and instructed me to do it twice a day (I still only did it once a day because it took forever and I barely wake up in the morning with enough time to shower before I have to go to work).
Anyway, as I said, my teeth are a disaster. I have one broken tooth (a whole corner gone), a wisdom tooth that's got a gaping hole in the side, and one tooth that developed a huge cavity. I'd been toughing it out, thinking...I don't know, it'd get better? It got to the point where I could only eat with one side of my mouth, and that side had the worst cavity, so every time I bit down on something a little too hard, pain would shoot through my face. My husband told me that he hated seeing me in pain all the time, so I finally resolved that this year, I'd get my mouth right. As it stands, I just finished with the root canal and crown for that bad tooth (the cavity had reduced the tooth to practically a hollow shell, one bad hard bite would have probably cratered it). As soon as I pay off a bit more on my credit cards, I'm going to have the broken tooth get a root canal and another crown. Then I'll probably get that awful wisdom tooth pulled. Oh yes, this dentist is going to be rich.
But anyway, tl;dr is this: don't be afraid. Waiting makes it worse. Even if you just go in for a cleaning, you'll feel a lot better. It will hurt. There'll be a surprising amount of blood. But if you're like me, you'll finally stop having dreams about your teeth shattering in your mouth and leaving you with husks and broken shards.
Good luck, anon. :) And if you live in the Houston area, try Carus Dental on Jones Road. :)
