Think of fanfiction as "more books in that book series that you love above all else" and it's easy to see why we get sucked into devouring fanfiction. When I'm obsessed with something all I want is more media based on my obsession; it's why I'll go out and buy the coloring books of something I love if that's all I can find. So when there's tons and tons of media (fanfiction) to be had for our current obsession, opening a book that doesn't involve those obsessions seems flat, univiting, doesn't it? We don't want anything to waste our time or, heaven forbid, take us into a new obsession when we're not ready to leave the one we're in.

(And, yes, fanfiction panders to our wants, too. Better porn than you'll find in most published books, better hurt/comfort, better hilarious cracky AU/ARs, etc.)
