This bothers me too. Esp when characters go out of their way to call them Edward Christian Sherlock Doctor Hawke instead of "Hawke" like they would in canon.

Though I would totally read a fic about Edward Christian Sherlock Doctor Hawke, just sayin.

*snort*

I hear ya, OP. It's nice when author's use just "Hawke."

Question, though - do you not find it jarring when a story's about a different class/gender Hawke than what you customarily play?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the secret poster but no unless they're OOC. Hawke has a personality within a certain range, like having canon AUs, but there are definitely limits.

For example having characters call Hawke "Castiel Applejack Vriska" makes them OOC because nobody ever does that.

...They should.

Yeah, I can see that - a small detail that can jar you out of the story.

(I've not written much DA2, but I'm usually even hesitant to mention anything other than eye color in a physical description, since I'd think a lot of readers are visualizing their own Hawke's hair.)

OP

I mostly avoid M!Hawke fic for that reason, since I'm so used to F!Hawke. (It doesn't help that most M!Hawke fic is wildly OOC slash either.) I don't mind different classes, but it does take a while to figure out which Hawke personality I'm reading about each time.

I only sort of agree. I think it depends on the skill of the writer and the ridiculousness of the name. Some of the best fic I read had a differently named Hawke. In fact, the different name helped when characterizing the Hawke sometimes.

However, not everyone is a fabulous writer and sometimes I have to sit there and play the game, "Is this Hawke or an OC who is not the player character?" Or it just feels off or weird.

Yes. Really awkward when they have special snowflake names too.

I like the use of Hawke too, but my biffle feels the opposite so obviously this is just one of those things that you're either into or you aren't. Hawke just feels more IC to me, but some people think it feels impersonal. *shrugs*

Elam took the words right out of my mouth (probably because I am said biffle), but I'm of the camp that feels it's impersonal for your love interest to call you by your last name always (same with Mass Effect; I refuse to believe your LI is always going to be calling you "Shepard"). However, I do agree that fic should either stick with the last name or with canon first names.

Basically this. It's a matter of game mechanic, nobody knows if given the choice those characters would prefer to call them by their last or first name (not even taking into account how they stand with them) so insisting that it's not true to canon would be rather silly.

But yes to canon first names too.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, 100%. I write them as Garrett or Marian Hawke (sp? it's been awhile) because those are the canon names. For that matter, I hate when they look much different from their canon selves, either. I know people can do what they want, and write and draw the Hawke from their own experience, but it still irrationally bothers me because I feel like I'm reading a self-insert or OC, which I'm not interested in.

This. So Hard.

I hate it when people do this in fic for any kind of "insert name" games, where the character has a default name, or has a standard nickname / partial name to go by.

I've had quite a few Mass Effect fics ruined for me because of character's constantly referring to Shepard by the author's version of his/her first name, instead of their last name, as every single character refers to them in canon.
Worse yet, when they try to erase the existing character's personality for their own. Yes, these kinds of games give you choices and customization, but the player character still has a sort of personality. If you're going to practically swap them for an OC, just make an OC.

Haven't read any DA2 fic yet, but that bugs me in a lot of Bioware!fic. Nothing draws me out of a fic more than not calling them by the name they were given in the game, but I mean I've gotten past it a couple of times for really good fic, but still.
stackcats: (Default)

[personal profile] stackcats 2012-08-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Although I'd also accept "Ebon" as a canon Hawke name. Because Bioware must have been thinking it too.

[personal profile] i_paint_the_sky 2012-08-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this definitely bothers me too. I don't really know why, considering I always rename the characters, but in fic, I want the default names.

I do agree that there are times when you need to break away from just using "Hawke" though, but it should be rare, definitely reserved for special characters (LI or family members being the most likely). At least with Anders, he starts referring to Hawke as "love" instead of by name (no idea if the others do as well, I've only played DA2 once).

Word.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2012-08-15 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can see why it bugs you - though in some contexts, a first name can be preferred. IIRC the standard name suggested for Fem!Hawke was Marion, and I never really thought it suited her - so I'd frankly take an original name over that.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-15 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have this exact problem with Mass Effect fics. I'm fine if they mostly stick to Shepard/Hawke/etc, but if they constantly call the character by special-snowflake first name, yeah it takes me out of the fic and I forget I'm reading about Shepard/Hawke/etc.

Sure, in the bedroom your LI calling you by your last name is kind of weird and a first name is better, but even then I'd rather hear/use the default name. :P

[personal profile] elialshadowpine 2012-08-15 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This... doesn't really bother me? But then, I consider the Dragon Age and Mass Effect games to be customizing your character; no two person's are going to be completely alike. And while special snowflake names can be annoying in general (this annoys me in original fiction too, when the lead character has a name like, totally making up here, Alysandra, and the rest of the characters are something like Jack and Meg and Elizabeth).

I mean, if the person is trying to say that they're writing about canon character then yeah, that would be annoying, but if they're writing about their personal character and are up front about it, I don't really have the same expectations.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't play DA2, but it's similar in Mass Effect, and I actually really like it. To be fair, I haven't read very much fic for it yet and generally stick to stuff by really good authors, but having a different first name each time makes it effectively a different version of the character each time, different traits, different likes and dislikes. I mean, it's still really all the same character but having multiple versions is really interesting to me, even if they happen to have a "weird" name.
