One time when I was twelve, I was at this large retail chain store with my mom. She had to go up to the customer service desk, and I waited about fifteen feet away with our shopping cart. All of a sudden, this guy who looked like he was in his mid-twenties and who was a store employee came up close to me and, out of the blue, asked, "Hey, what's your name?" Yes. He was an employee. He had on a store vest and was sweeping the floor. I'm pretty sure he was legit. Everything about it--his demeanor, the way he'd just come up and asked me my name, everything--seemed really skeevy, but I didn't want to actually engage him, so I just walked away and pushed the cart closer to where my mom was. The guy followed me and said, "I didn't hear you. What did you say your name was?" Again, it felt like he was trying to chat me up. I just looked at him in shock and contemplated going right over to my mom. Before I could, this woman who appeared to be his girlfriend came over and started talking to him, and he promptly "forgot" me.

I wasn't scared. Just confused and shocked. I think the fact that the guy seemed to have a girlfriend was the icing on the cake for me. He came across so creepily.

In retrospect, I don't know if I should have talked to a manager or something. But I was twelve, and kind of floored by it. I did tell my mom, though.

That sounds...bizarre. Like...what

It was really weird! I mean, he didn't do anything explicitly threatening, and even then I tried to give people the benefit of the doubt. But his tone and demeanor felt just like one of those stereotypical "stranger danger" scenarios.
