this is why i don't understand people who take senior pictures with their significant others. there's a good chance you're gonna split up and it'll just make things awkward

(op) In my experience, breaking up with exes doesn't inherently mean you can't look back on those memories happily, or can't stay friends after. I've been able to stay friends my other exes without too much awkwardness. This guy and I actually planned to break up before we even started dating (because we'd be long-distance come college), and we knew each other a long time before we went out, so I figured there'd be no problem in having him in my graduation/grad night/senior ball pictures along with all my other friends. But then he started being a jerk after we broke up to the point where we couldn't be friends anymore. :<

Sorry, that was kind of a coolstorysis, but basically what I'm trying to say is, I really disagree with people who say it's hard to stay on good terms with exes. IMO it's really just not, unless one of you is a jerk.
