I see. It's a lot to consider. It's also a bit intimidating. But thank you for telling me. I really appreciate it. :)

I think I'll start poking my nose around to see what comics I would like.

While I agree that Loki is over woobiefied, Walter really is the scum of the earth, so...

(But seriously, as much as I dislike Loki, until does this to a character I care about like I care about Jesse Pinkman, he will be nowhere near as high on my shitlist as Walter:

He was taking care of Jesse so he could use him to replace Walt. He would have had killed them both if Gale wasn't dead.

Jesus, you talk about people woobifying Walt and you're just as bad with Gus because he has a dead boyfriend. Ugh.

HAHAHAHAHA loling forever at the third one XD I see why it'd kill the mood.

No, I've seen this person around quite a lot (I share a couple of fandoms), it's not a F!S sock. I get so much second-hand paranoia when I see people anon-fail, but maybe you're right about them not caring if people know who wrote it.

Breaking Bad is widely considered to be one of the greatest television shows ever made with the actor playing the so called mundane guy winning numerous awards for his portrayal.

I don't blame you for not knowing about the show though because he doesn't run around in spandex.

Uh, no. There are a lot of implications, backed up by creator and actor interviews, that Gus had come to view Jesse as a member of his crew at that point*, and had certain sympathies towards him because of what happened with Max. It's possible to few Gus as nothing but a heartless sociopath, I suppose, but I think that cheapens the character, just as viewing Walt as nothing but a suffering hero cheapens his.

At the same time, I don't see anything in my comment that woobifies Gus. I'm explaining why people who hate Walt are into Gus in season four: because Walt is on a downward arc while Gus is simultaneously getting positive development, and because their treatment of Jesse is at extreme opposites at that point. Also, notably, Walt only gets Jesse back by manipulating him, while Gus at that point seems to be treating him as a regular employee (I suppose this is debatable but I don't see how else to read the scene in the hospital).

*ETA: By "that point," I obviously mean after Jesse started working for Mike. Yes, before that, Gus would have killed him if he had the option.

Re: Turning in fannish things as class work...

[personal profile] thursdaymoose 2012-08-18 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
My freshman english teacher had us keep journals. They were private, though we had writing time every class. Then we had to write stories in the journals, and turn them in.

And that's the story of the time I turned in an AU Kingdom Hearts fic to my teacher, names unchanged. At least it was gen.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's not true.

Since One More Day, the event in question, Amazing Spider-Man's sales have gone down significantly. Marvel's getting desperate with each arc being a big "event" and having ten thousand variant covers per issue.

Re: Describe your fandom!

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-08-18 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's sort of a bit of both, really. The two main ones people play with are Sebastian Moran and Mary Morstan. Sebastian Moran loosely defined is Moriarty's right hand man, and most people who write him write him as basically Moriarty's John Watson (even though that tramples all over some characterization but whatchagonnado?) Either way it is widely accepted (even by the people who don't think that they were intimate or close) that Moran had some say in Moriarty's organization and that he was a sniper for Moriarty. He pretty much even has a fan 'set appearance,' most people draw him as blond and pale and tall and muscular.

Mary Morstan is a bit different. She's John's ACD canon wife, so most of the fandom hates her because she clashes with the OTP of Sherlock/John, and quite a bit of the stories just have her exist as a character so John can angst over the fact that he really loves Sherlock more. Reasonable people in the fandom shudder at the future wank, because it's almost certain that she'll be appearing soon and it's even more certain that a lot of the fandom will be very vocal about loathing her. She doesn't really have a set appearance or characteristics other than 'she's that woman that John gets in a serious relationship with.'

I think once Sebastian becomes canon people will just shrug their shoulders and adapt to it, because people are actually probably not too far off the mark when guessing about him, but there's probably definitely going to be assloads of people writing around Mary and bashing her.

I pretty much shudder at the thought of there being anymore canon romances at all, because anything that contradicts the things that people already ship makes them mad.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
...huh, good point. I hadn't even thought of that.

Damnit, where'd I put that applause gif?

You're awesome. I love you.

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2012-08-18 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
*high fives*

What's funny is the more I think about it, the more I think the OP chose one of the worst comparisons to make the point about Loki, precisely because of the way BB positions Walter.

I'm a person who tends to be able to sympathize with (and often really, really like) villains who show any sort of sympathetic traits/motivations, even villains in more realistic canons. Stringer Bell of The Wire is one of my favorite characters of all time -- and not in a love to hate way; I really half wanted the man to succeed despite how terrible he was. Heck, I even sympathized with Gus on BB some after the episode "Hermanos."

But I haaate Walter at this point. HATE. Why? Because the show is working overtime to make sure I do. Even with the killing Coulson thing mentioned above, Avengers is trying nowhere near as hard to make me hate Loki. The point of that movie is for us to root for the good guys; hating Loki is just part of that story. The point of Breaking Bad is for us to hate Walter, full stop.

"kind mean comments"... jesus fucking christ. Reverse it for a second. "this is an anti-gay blog!" "homoNO" etc, that's not KINDA MEAN. that's downright hate. and it's hate no matter which direction it's in. yes, gay people deal with this all. the. time. doesn't make it okay when it's aimed the other way.

Re: Favorite Single Chapter of Harry Potter?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-08-18 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I loved OotP so fucking much! Technically, PoA is my favorite story and book, but OotP....I could write paragraphs about how MUCH awesome on so many levels OotP holds within it. The emotions, the tension, the escalation, the pacing, the characterization, the atmosphere, the meta both on the political and personal teenage fronts, the horror, the uncontrived darkness, the unbelievably well-done twisting thread of political drama, the consistency and drive, the complete trainwreck that is Harry's state of mind, the mind-blowing awesomeness that was the department of mysteries, the sheer width of material covered, the parallels and layers and complexity and foreshadowing, the amazing battle, the breath-taking rawness and impact of The Lost Prophecy...and those are only the few amazing things I can say off the top on my head at one in the morning.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
And the scene where Gus stages the robbery for Jesse to stop (or something like that it's been a while) doesn't count as manipulation? I'm sure Gus came to respect him but at the same time he was a replacement for Walt.

Walt cares about Jesse too to the point where mistook his own son for him. So likewise it's not just manipulation with him.

Neither character is black and white but Gus is undoubtedly worse than Walt is so I'm a bit baffled that everyone hates Walt while treating Gus like some sassy HBIC.

I think I shipped Ash/Misty from when I started watching Pokemon at age 5 and had no idea shipping existed. Still my Pokemon OTP.

First ship I ever read fic for was Sakura/Syaoran of Cardcaptor Sakura. Good times.

Your pics are always so freaking adorable! I'm especially in love with the last spider and the bright orange/reddish stripe across its tiny face. It looks like it has a bandana of some sort, or played dressing up as mom and messed with her lipstick and now's looking at you expectant like saying 'look, look what I did!' and wanting some compliments :)

Hey, it's not my fault you're missing out on a great show because the main character isn't some sexy superhero with a sixpack.
