Turning in fannish things as class work...

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-08-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I always cite my bad Digimon Mary-Sue as the first fic I wrote, but I just suddenly remembered that the first fanfic I wrote was actually for the game Oregon Trail! I turned it as a class writing assignment  in fourth grade. (I remember I wrote that one of "my" daughters died while we were fording the river because that's always what happened to me. I even wrote in a run down of how many chickens and yards of muslin we lost.)

Did you ever write fic or turn in something fannish as a class assignment?

When I was taking a course in Flash Animation all my projects were somehow based on Stargate SG1 or Atlantis - one project was to make a video/song player and I used vids of the opening themes to make it.

Then the last week of class we used some other program where you could make a 3D landscape and have a vehicle moving around in it. I of course created a Stargate world (complete with a Stargate) and my vehicle was a M.A.L.P.

(The professor was a science fiction fan so he was always excited to see what I did next)

Yeah.

We had an assignment to present a book in a folder and I chose the novel to Revenge of the Sith. I had written a rather long FanFiction at that point about an OC who fled Order 66 etc.

I handed it in with the folder because I think one option for stuff to do was also to write something.

My teacher was pretty excited to get about 40 or so pages of (probably bad) fiction from a student xD

Frequently. Some of it was disguised cleverly, but some wasn't. Most notable was when in English class we had to do a description of a person and a place in detail, and I picked one of my favourite characters from my main fandom in a place he frequents.

When I was young (like ten) the first creative writing story I ever made for class was based REALLY heavily on Harry Potter. Hey, when you're young you write what you like :D

In a more recent example, last semester I aced a religion and mysticism class by writing a paper all about how sometimes for people fandom experience is very similar to religion and spiritual things, and I basically based the entire paper around the Harry Potter fandom.

That paper sounds so interesting, really. Would you share more about it? :)

I wrote a lot of fic for writing assignments when I was pretty young. I didn't really do it much in high school but I incorporated fandom things into assignments. There was a lot of Doctor Who, looking back on it...

We had to rewrite short stories and add a new ending. I suppose that counts haha.

I remember trying to design a gundam in my drafting class in high school which turned out to be an epic fail because I sucked at autocad.

I'm a cartooning major, and I've done a few fannish comics as assignments, though none of my major ones. I even did a big bang assignment for class work! My favorite is a one page Sherlock/John comic I did where they had a dog named Moriarty (http://cherrycolouredart.tumblr.com/post/29653307517/i-actually-drew-this-a-couple-years-ago-and-have).

As often as I could!

in foreign language classes I would make exercise sentences using characters' names, would do fanart whenever we could draw whatever we wanted to, etc.

An alternate ending to Gone With the Wind in 7th or 8th Grade. In it I had Scarlett go back to Tara and turn her grief into successfully running the plantation. She also rebuilt her relationships with her other two children.

Rhett died in a fire at that house. Oh and she bought Ashley's plantation next door and gave it to her sister, so Scarlett could have Tara to herself.

I was terribly biased.

I totally have. I remember for fashion class I had to do a collage of different outfits and I picked them all out of my favorite manga.

Also back in elementary school, whenever we had assignments where we had to write sentences using vocabulary words, my friend and I would write all our sentences about Pokemon and share them with each other. Good times. I still sometimes do Pokemon vocabulary sentences out of habit when I study languages. 'xD

When I was growing up, my mom was obsessed with soap operas. I watched a few of them with her, and I think they were actually my first fandom-ish type thing. I remember writing what was essentially a fanfic for one of them in middle school and turning it in as a short story. I can't remember what show it was for or much about what happened except that I think it involved a sinking cruise ship or something, but I remember I got 100 on it. :) I also remember using various soap characters' names when I had to write example sentences for vocab words when I was even younger. I was a weird kid.

In high school, I turned in a fan-poem from the perspective of Sailor Saturn without using any names...my English teacher pulled me aside after class asking me if there was anything I needed to talk about.

I once turned in what was basically a South Park fic where no names were given as a winter-themed short story assignment in my sophomore year of high school.

Winter-themed. Geddit? :D

My freshman english teacher had us keep journals. They were private, though we had writing time every class. Then we had to write stories in the journals, and turn them in.

And that's the story of the time I turned in an AU Kingdom Hearts fic to my teacher, names unchanged. At least it was gen.

I didn't write fic but in one of my english classes we had to write sentences with our vocab words in it. Well, one time I got really bored so I used the assignment to write about accidentally getting all the Planeteer rings and summoning Captain Planet. I can't remember what happened after that but I'm assuming I made fun of his mullet or something.

Oh! And one time I had to write an alliterative poem about a "made up creature" so I chose Moombas. Because Moombas are awesome.

I once had to write a biography about a famous person when I was still in high school, so I asked my teacher if I could write about a made-up person or a character from a book/movie/game etc. She said yes, so I wrote a biography about Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy 7. I scored 15/15 for that paper.

Also, I remember when I was around 11 years old, I wrote a story for class that was based on a combination of Winnie the Pooh and Jack and the Beanstalk. Not sure if that counts though.

Umm... there was also a story I wrote for my creative writing class which used William Beckett (from The Academy Is...) as the main character, although I only used his first name and never gave the character a last name, but the description would've made it obvious to anyone who knew me well at the time. I wrote a very short piece for the same class using another famous singer as the main character, but I used no names for that one.

For a couple years when I was in elementary school, we did this thing where we would each write and illustrate a "book", and then it would get printed on nice paper and bound and basically actually become a book. It was pretty cool, and I think I still have mine somewhere.

Anyway, I totally wrote self-insert Stargate fanfic for one of them. I had Ra come back from the dead and hung out with Major Carter and everything. I think it was also inspired by YGO, but it was definitely a Stargate fic. I kind of forget about it a lot of the time, because it wasn't the first thing I really considered fanfic and posted online, but that's. definitely what it was.

Yeah, we had to write a short story based on To Kill a Mockingbird in year 9, and I actually published it on FFN a couple of years later. >.> It honestly wasn't that bad, though, just amateurish and unsubtle. Then I had one of my "delete everything" phases because I was afraid my lj friends would find out I wrote fic. Idek, I was a weird kid, okay? :P

One of my assignments in my senior year of high school after we read Lord of the Flies was to either do a character analysis of a character of my choice or write a thirteenth chapter. I wrote chapter thirteen.

I also wrote Harry Potter fanfiction in my literature class in college whenever we were tasked with writing short stories for assignments.
