Best one sentence explanation I've heard so far for ASOIF is that it's an utter inversion of high fantasy. Were this Tolkien, nobility and high-mindedness should be saving the day. By high fantasy logic Ned should be sitting on the iron throne, now, and not, you know, pining for the fjords.
Makes me love the series even more, though. Could just be the cruel left over poli sci major side of me, though, too.
