I think that Chris Eccleston brought a gravitas to the role that no one else ever has. Also a kind of dark sexuality. I loved him. Those last two episodes of his series, the best speechifying bit of any Dr Who ever when he's threatening to destroy the Daleks, and the bit shortly before when he and Jack are in the prison, and his quiet despair about Rose being dead. He really was the best.

Tom Baker is my doctor, from my childhood, but I think Nine is definitely the best of the modern lot.
