Ha, this is me, pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I don't care if friends think they're being ~cute when they do it, it irritates me beyond belief.

It makes me side-eye whoever typed it, but I will read what the person has to say. Or at least start reading it...doesn't mean I'll finish.

Me too. It used to be a huge pet peeve of mine that I'd rant about, but I've noticed that plenty of people who do have intelligent things to say will still do it, so I've mellowed out about it.

Well that's kind of... pointlessly picky.

I can be quite the spelling Nazi, but for fannish terms? Not so much.
People get confused about them, sometimes. Especially new fans.
Abloo-bloo-bloo.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But canon isn't a fannish term.

A semi-BNF (definitely NOT a newbie) in my fandom keeps doing this.

I don't stop listening, but I break my -don't be an anal jerk- rule and correct them when they do this with this word.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty idiotic, actually. Some of the smartest, most perceptive people I know are hopeless at spelling. Some people are terrible at algebra but find geometry is easy, some people are better with faces than names or voices, and some really, really smart people can't spell, no matter how hard they try. Hell, even people who are excellent at spelling tend to have a few words that are tricky for them for no good reason at all.

If they're spelling it cannon just to be cute, that's one thing. But discounting something that's otherwise interesting because of an incorrectly spelled word is, yeah, stupid.

I can stand an occasional cannon/villian/rouge/your, but when that happens continuously...yep, I quit reading.

Occasionally they can be quite fun, like my recent favorite: and he wrapped his legs around his waste (gee, that sounds unhygienic).

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-18 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, this bugs me. I don't think to the point that I won't read what the writer has to say, but yeah. Bugs me.

I usually assume the person is young or ESL, so I don't mind it. If they have been in English-speaking fandom a long time, though, I side-eye them if they use it repeatedly.

I feel kinda terrible about it, but "cannon" instead of "canon" is a huge pet peeve of mine. I'm not even sure why it bothers me so much.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you liked everything else they were saying? Even if their arguments are well-constructed? Even if there are no other grammar issues?
This is ridiculous. It's pointless snobbishness. You understood what they meant. Get over it.

You do realize that, especially with this kind of error, the person might even have just accidentally pressed the 'n' key one too many times, right?

I find it funny, because it makes me think about all the fandom/ship wars and I imagine them using the official information as a sort of proverbial weapon.

Plus, with stuff like that I find it kinda hard to be too mad if someone only does it a couple of times. Sometimes I misspell or hit a key twice when I'm typing something fast, so I don't wanna judge too quickly.

lol seconded
I don't understand why people keep spelling it like that
I thought that it was the ironical version of the world (used to say it's bad canon or it's called canon but it isn't)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I sympathize. I don't know that it will make me stop reading something, but it does always make me pause for a moment. Others that I frequently see - lots of people seem to get "warily" and "wearily" mixed up. And "bare" and "bear". And it seems like even the best writers get "bemused" and "amused" mixed up. For me, it's kind of like tripping over something on the sidewalk - you're just reading happily along, and then "er, wait, that doesn't quite make sense there...what?" Maybe that's just me though. :)

As someone with pretty bad dyslexia, who none the less managed to get a degree in english lit despite of that.

You should probably ~check your privilege~.

If your reading comprehension was near as good as you seem to pride yourself on (your type of person always seems to) then this wouldn't even be something you'd pick up on - you'd subconsciously correct it and move on.

Then again, grammar nazis are the stamp collectors of the literary world.
