I get it (especially the rape) and I have no idea who this guy is but on the other hand it's a video game.

Everyone gets murdered. I think everyone should be killed equally.

This.

However, the sexualization of violence that some gamers do when it's a woman is still really gross though.

The more people like you are in the gaming community and speak up, I think the more likely it is that the community will change. That's how I feel about it personally. That being said, I COMPLETELY understand your frustration, I feel the same way sometimes.

I agree.

Thank you for existing. We need more men like you.

That's pretty much why I've stopped supporting the video game community by buying their games (with Valve being the only exception, and occasionally Nintendo). The mainstream one, anyways. I'm starting to lean more towards indie titles, since they don't have that layer of filth on them that the mainstream stuff does.

Saying you don't want to support 'gaming culture' because of icky things is like saying you don't want to support 'film culture' because of things like 'I Spit on Your Grave', or 'book culture' because of 50 Shades of Grey'.

I agree with you in principle, but the terms 'gaming' and 'gaming culture' are too ridiculously general to make this even a slightly compelling secret to me.

I game and have been a part of what I guess you could call gaming culture and have never had problems with this sort of thing. I am fully aware the this is a certain problem in other parts of 'gaming culture' though, so certainly not dismissing you. More specificity would have been good though.

On the plus side, this is changing. Increasingly, the gaming community are starting to wake up to the fact that we're not all 15-year-old dudebros. Things in gaming that would never have raised an eyebrow ten, even five years ago are raising increasingly bigger stinks.

I don't know. I've seen a lot of it, for example, in the League of Legends forums. There was this one issue, where a person from a team during a -streamed- tourny, that he 'raped' the other team. Some people got offended and he apologized. The GC blew up. Tons of guys were bitching about how they should be able to use the term rape, and that it's not fair to them, and they shouldn't have to censor themselves, screw women, blahblah. But the GC isn't exactly the most female friendly place to go, though.

So play different games. And avoid MMOs.

Support the right kinds of games by making sure you buy games that don't have that stuff in them and don't pander to that type of person.

If you don't get any games at all, then nothing you do in regards to games matters to the developers. If you support the games that do things right, then more games that do things right will be made.

you can get around a lot of that by being a solitary gamer and picking your games well, if that's something that would appeal to you.

:/ So support the games that don't have that?

Like, not all games are misogynistic crap just like not all movies are misogynistic crap. Don't throw the whole medium in the barrel of fish to shoot it. Use your money to state your opinion. Reward game-makers for good quality games.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely understand your disgust and frustration, but I don't think abandoning the gaming community helps anything. Some advice: step back from the community for awhile. It gets really overwhelming, I know, and it can fill you with frustration and hate and despair. But just step back for awhile, take a break and just enjoy your gaming on it's own.

Also, the community needs people like you. It needs more people (and men especially) to speak up and not stand for this bullshit behavior. So please don't leave.

Yeah I refuse to play online games for these reasons.

I do have positive experiences with gamers, but I play a lot of the more "girly" and innocent games so the most I get are people leaving me an occasional dumb message. My guy friends try to tell me I should go online and play certain games, but I just don't want to expose myself to the kind of comments that go on in those games.

My guy friends just think it's funny and a good way to release stress, I can't deal with it though.

Good for you, seriously. Especially if you let the sponsors and game dev people know why you're not going to participate anymore. Every time I see a guy say "you don't represent me and this is insulting" I feel a little more hope for humanity.

But you should support gaming communities that don't tolerate that culture :) My BF plays SC2 and seems to successfully avoid that shit for the most part, if you're the kind of nerd who like Starcraft...

I've decided to never watch some movies because of feminist articles pointing out how sexualized the violence against the female characters was in it.

Good for you for not supporting that, but you don't have to give up all games. Support the ones that do it right. And there needs to be more men actively going against the misogyny in the video game world anyway.

[personal profile] honk 2012-08-18 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
there are a lot of good games out on the market that don't buy into rape culture or anything gross, so you could support those instead

there are countless others that portray real life issues tastefully/realistically, rather than because the developers hate women/poc/lgbt people or whatever. i don't think any element should be taboo in media, so long as it's not supporting or propagandising the issues

There are other games out there that have compelling story-lines, good characters, etc.

Take a few days off from the PC, look around you, get yourself involved in outdoor activities, then search/ask for compelling games using whatever you want to...

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-08-18 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
But -- okay, there are all kinds of games out there. You don't have to paint them all with the same brush. Proffessor Layton and Sly Cooper and Pac man aren't about raping women. The ones that have violence against women are a fairly small subset.

Can't you enjoy gaming and be a gamer, and just be selective of the games you buy? I love me Pic-cross 3D, but I wouldn't touch Mortal Combat.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I sympathise with you.

And this is exactly the reason I've begun avoiding most "nerd" culture stuff, like cons and video games and superhero comics.

There's a dark side to the culture that I feel most guys are completely uanware of - but some of the vitriol and abuse I've received, because of the fact I'm a woman, has made me feel sick.
I feel unsafe in "nerd culture", and it was the only place I had. Now I don't know where I fit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
it's very frustrating OP, I agree. Personally I spoil myself with games by finding out if it's going to be horribly sexist beforehand, and I stay away from multiplayers. That's where the worst of the immediate sexism is.

I'm with everyone who says to support the games that don't pander to rape culture. And if it's not the games that are the problem, but the people who play them being gross... well, there's nothing wrong with you playing with them. It might even give you a chance to stand up to them. (Of course, if hearing that crap is so bothersome that playing it is no longer fun, that's totally understandable, too. I'm just saying, you're not an asshole just because you play the same games as other assholes.)

I no longer really enjoy gaming in any form - video games, card games or board games - because the community is always so disgusting. It's a shame, because I really enjoyed these hobbies, but I've taken up other more female-friendly ones to avoid this shit.
