I can ship Leon and Mathilda while hoping that someone castrates Roman Polanski and leaves him to bleed to death so I'm not seeing the problem with fiction seeping into reality.

It's subtle, but you've got pre-teens and teenagers who are just starting to explore their own sexuality stumbling and even drawing or writing themselves lolicon and shotacon and other underage things and, even if they're saying "yeah, this is fictional", that shit gets into your subconscious in ways you don't expect.

I don't know, I think this is a good question. I think it's very normal and common for pre-teens and teens to not only feel attracted to older people but also see it as somewhat normal. A lot of times, you just don't see yourself as "a kid" when you're actually a kid. I remember crushing hard on my twenty-something art teacher when I was 12, and even though I understood in a basic way that nothing could happen between us, the thought of something happening didn't exactly feel wrong at the time. Now, of course, I'm 24 and the idea feels very wrong. But I didn't need to be exposed to lolicon or shotacon to feel that way, and I don't think my feelings when I was 12 were wrong. What would have been wrong is if my teacher, the adult, acted inappropriately. The responsibility really falls on the adults who should know better.

I'm not really concerned about young people writing fiction about young characters with older ones. Like I said, I think it's a fairly common fantasy for young people to have.

I think the question is more whether or not seeing fiction or art that depicts young characters in pedophiliac/ephebophiliac situations normalizes it too much. That, I see as a bigger concern, and I'm not sure what I think.

I just re-read my comment and realized I typoed away some words. orz

I meant to say: "stumbling into (lolicon, etc.) and even starting to draw and write (lolicon, etc.) themselves, because (or at least encouraged by the other works) they start to see it as normal."

I agree about how it feels different and normal when you're young vs old, but yeah, that part at the end of your comment was what I was trying to get at: that they start seeing an idea repeated so much that, even if, intellectually, they know that it is wrong, it starts registering in the back of their minds as "it's okay, it's harmless (because it's fiction)", and at that age, while you probably have a good grasp on good vs evil, safety vs danger, etc., more abstract long-term (not time - long term, but chain of people and circumstances - long term) causes vs consequences is something that you're still building in your "map" of how the world works, and not necessarily in a conscious way, and, from my own experience and from what I've seen of my peers at the time and from younger people now that I'm old, sometimes it's up to the luck of what places and texts/explanations you stumble into how you start organizing all that in your mind, so you might come away with the seeds of bad conclusions.

From what I've heard, the guy who directed the movie came out strongly against Polanski while a bunch of other movie types were kissing his ass.

(Of course I don't even know if he shipped it, but still.)
