OMG, so much this.

SJW in fandom are not about equality, they're about policing people and about shaming people.

Personally I also hate the ones who get in a hissyfit but then refuse refuse to explain why, because "they're not obligated to" and you should just magically know what they're talking about.

Well yeah, you're not obligated, but it's not very constructive, now is it?

AYRT. Yeah I'm really not a fan of the "educate yourself" responses people are a fan of online. Yes it is no one's job to educate- but the problem with telling someone to look it up themself is you have no idea where they are going and you may just end up finding they researched and ending up becoming even more hateful (because there is a lot of hateful literature, and much of it is even well spoken and argued.)

The least someone can do is provide links to websites, "educate yourself" is most often just a cheap way to shut down an argument and to make it seem like you have the superior knowledge.

And really, if you want to make progress or get into these arguments in the first place, you should be ready to educate other people. Even if it's just about your own experiences sometimes that is helpful to open minds. That is what we're supposed to be after- opening minds... not needlessly arguing forever to the point that no one ever changes.

OMFG, this. No one is forcing you to participate in a discussion you ~don't have the spoons for~ (btw, able-bodied SJWs completely ignore the fact that they appropriated this phrase from the disability community because they liiiiike it, and it's rly hypocritical and weird). You can bow the fuck out if you're too mad for a rational, helpful conversation. Only the trolliest trolls will hassle you for being like, yeah, nope, I gtg in a situation like that.

OH GOD I hate hate hate it when people do this. Not everyone knows about certain minority issues. Hell, I didn't even know homosexuality existed until half way through middle school.

THIS AND THIS.

I like to try to educate people, personally, because everyone learns something that way. You can exchange ideas civilly, examine them, mend fences, and move on. Shouting at people without bothering to tell them what they did wrong or why it was wrong does absolutely nothing productive or useful. Sure, you can tell them to Google that shit, but it won't help if they have no idea what the hell they're supposed to be Googling or why.

(And before you go "THAT'S A TONE ARGUMENT, YOU TONE-SHAMER! DON'T OPPRESS ME!"... well, yeah, would YOU be inclined to listen to someone who screams at you and belittles you, and you have no idea what you did wrong? For the most part, we're adults or something like it. We can act like we're civilized and rational.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
How about the one where the SJW is trying to educate YOU on YOUR OWN LIFE, and they think you're not getting it? Because that's happened to me, before.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, often when people don't explain why they're upset it's because either a) they're not particularly good at expressing themselves when angry, or b) they've already explained it a hundred times and no matter how patient or understanding they try to be the conversation almost always ends with the person they're talking to going off in a huff because they refuse to consider that maybe they're wrong and the person they're arguing with is right to say they're being offensive or bigoted, so they just don't even bother with the niceties to begin with because they know it never actually works out.

Also, look up tone argument on google.

The problem is that human communication doesn't really work that way.

As for a):trying to establish dialog when angry almost never works. So you'll probably be doing one of 2 things: 1) venting and screaming, which indeed might help you feel better, but won't win people over or 2) waiting until your calm and trying to educate that person. But trying to do 1 & 2 AT ONCE just doesn't work, because generally you can't antagonize AND win people over in the same move.

As for 2): I realise it really, really sucks having to explain something ad nauseam, but every new person that you meet and says something that bothers you does not know of (or is responsible) for your history with other people. And to them your reaction will be disproportionate.

As for the tone argument...I just don't think it works to appeal to that in real life situations. I mean, yes, obviously, someone who is screaming and fuming might still be right - but realistically, their message will get lost because of their rage. It's one of those thing where you need to pick whether you feel like you have the moral high ground because of principle, or if you want to be practical about it.

Lastly, there's also just the option of ignoring people who you consider to be assholes. Really, too few people take this option (and I'm guilty of it too).
