Totally. In fact, I think genre is important when looking at any sort of character that has moral ambiguity. But yeah, villains especially. As people have pointed out over and over again, liking characters isn't just about making a logical list of their good qualities and bad qualities. It's about visceral reaction. And how people viscerally react to "bad" actions is often going to be linked to how those bad things are portrayed.
And it's not even just about the violent side of bad things! For example, Thor tearing up as he entreats Loki to reconsider his actions just doesn't make me hate Loki in the same way Jesse breaking down and sobbing about what a bad person he is makes me hate Walt. Both are cases of a good character being made sad because of what a bad character does, but it gives me a very different get reaction.
