While that's great I feel the creative team eventually will change and instead of trying to stay true to whatever was going on before it always seems like it's a clean slate afterwards. I know this isn't always the case, it's just a fear I have because it’s happened.

And it's weird for me. American comics seem to be the only medium that I can't fully get into.

Sorry I seem really negative. I just wish I fully understood why I can't get into something I know I could enjoy.

I consider myself a comic book fan, but I wouldn't read current comics from issue-to-issue as they come out if you paid me to. I don't trust either Marvel or DC an inch to not fuck up everything I put my emotional investment into for the sake of a crisis crossover or a bit of cheap drama, and the anger and dismay I get from wasted emotional investment far outweighs any suspense that comes from reading it currently. I only read back issues, and you know what? I'm totally satisfied with them.

There's decades worth of awesomeness there, and an unbelievable volume of glorious characters, great stories, endlessly complex continuity that draws you in by functioning almost exactly like (and even more addictively than) Tv Tropes — leading you on and on and on via references to discover goldmines in the form of storylines and characters you'd never have thought to look at before, all in two brilliantly interwoven shared universes, all of which is far enough in the past that you can tell the good from the bad and get an assist on what storylines are important and why with a quick internet search.

Why bother with current crap? Read it in a couple years when the storylines have been told and their places in the universes have been established.

Just, how does one buy old comics? I was under the impression that the comic book stores in my area only sold new stuff and rare/exclusive stuff. And how much money should I be expecting to spend on this?

I buy a lot of trades, in which format most comic books stores should sell even really old comics, and order stuff online a lot. And a library near my university has a lot that I can borrow, so I'm guessing some other bigger libraries have comics too. The price varies a lot, so I dunno. Depends on what you're getting, I guess. Beware of the aforementioned TVTropes effect when it comes to the money, btw.

And, uh, sometimes I illegally download it, but I try to only do that when I'm just testing the waters and have no idea if I'll actually like something. Not because of morals, because I honestly would be ecstatic if Marvel never got another cent out of me, but it's pretty irritating and unsatisfying to try to read downloaded comic scans on your computer, compared to a physical issue or book. Much more so than watching a movie or reading plain text on the computer.

I think I'll start poking my nose around to see what comics I would like.
