I'm fine with it in theory.

My only problem is when I see the female version has gone out of their way to "sexify" it. I'm not against making something sexy it's just that when I see it my first thought is, "Of course, another female version and she's sexy. 'Cause, you know, it's not like us women are good for anything other than sex appeal." I'm bitter. This colors my view of things. Because hey, if she does want to be a sexy version how is it any of my business? Why should I care? I shouldn't be policing her or other women.

It would help me though if the girl had a guy with them dressed in a sexified male version too. Then I would feel better about it I think. But again, it's not my place.

Sometimes too I'm confused by female versions because I don't understand why they changed the costume at all because I thought it was a unisex costume. So the only difference the female version might have is that she's... female. Then again, that's not very fun from a costume design side.

This leads into people changing the costume too much to the point that I don't recognize the character they're trying to be. Change is good. Too much change and you have an original outfit.

Not at all! This has been very helpful.

I'm not a very experience cosplayer (read: at all), so a lot of the design stuff is over my head. But I'm interested mostly in trying to pull off a male character in the military as a female. But with the same attitude and badassery, and none of the sexy "Oh look I have my flight suit unzipped teehee" shenanigans that genderbending sometimes falls into. Especially with this niche, it strays away from the character's original intended design, and defeats the purpose.

But my big problem is that I hardly look old enough to be in the military as either gender, so I'll have to try really hard to pull of the attitude.

Basically what I want to do is try to look as badass and capable and grr as a female under 5 feet, as a man about 6 feet and ten years older than me. THIS SOUNDS LIKE A BAD IDEA IN RETROSPECT.

Would you be willing to tell me the character? I may be able to help you more if you do.

Also, let it be said that half of your costume isn't going to be what you wear but how you wear it. Acting goes a long way and believe me, if you act well enough you can make me believe anything.

A young Solid Snake, in his rookie days. Well, at that age Snake is about my age, so it's not too bad.

But I'm still worried about looking too young in general, even if I can pull off the prerequisite >:[ face.

So you're saying you want to look like this kind of female version of this costume?

It's not just about the face. It's you're whole body. How you walk, talk, sit. Everything adds to your legitimacy. A little bit of makeup to add a scar or dirt can help too.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about your body-type that much. Lots of people cosplay outside of body-type and they do it really well. Just be confident in yourself. You can do this.

If you're really worried maybe you can go watch videos of female soldiers and try to emulate them?

I think you'll do great. You obviously have the care and dedication. You want to do this right and that is really what matters most.

Ah, I'm not too worried about being able to act like a female soldier, I can def manage that. It's more of the over-the-top badassery that the character is supposed to project.

+1 to the acting. One of the best cosplayers I ever saw was an L cosplayer, which is not a terribly involved costume, but he was so into it- he walked around hunched over and checked his phone with one finger the way L does.

If it helps any, here's Saph's BB cosplay. She's also under 5 feet tall. I've seen some group poses she's done as BB and it's amazing - they'll just arrange themself in such a way that her tininess is completely negated by perspective.

I went to see a midnight showing of TDKR when it came out, and there were a few cosplayers around. My favourites were a couple who'd dressed as female!Batman (not particularly sexy) and male!Catwoman (...verrrry sexy). I really should have asked for a photo, because they were amazing.

It just reminds me there were a lot more crossplays this year in both gender directions at Comic Con this year. It was really cool.
