1. Have more confidence! I think pretty much anyone who takes pride in their OCs will feel a twinge of pain at the idea of them being like someone else's character, but keep in mind whoever witnesses your character only knows as much as what you show them. Ask yourself: are they REALLY like that character? Did you, infact, make a mimicry of someone else's work? Which is also nothing to be ashamed of, but it might mean you're not letting the character be who they are. WHICH might sound a little crazy, I don't know. But to me it's not possible to go and 'change' characters, once you've really found the character. They are who they are. Certainly, you can write them different, but it's... a lie then, right? Instead of trying to change them, why not find out more about them? Any character, from any movie, novel, anime, manga or even real life, looks like someone else from a far enough distance. There's no shame in that, it's just impossible to avoid. But as you zoom in on them; their mannerisms, their look, their opinions, their mentality, preferences, outlook on life, past, present, future should make them different, make them who they are. Have confidence in that, love that and you'll never have a reason to 'change' anyone again.

Characters are like people in a way, it's easy to relate one person to another, but that doesn't mean they're really anything alike, and there's no reason for them to change their clothing on their walk to make that more apparent, because in the end they're just making themselves look more like a completely different person.

11. ....that does look creepy. However, 'just draw' isn't an option for some people, and photoshop is! And the actors are visual representations of the characters. Additionally some people probably find real people more appealing than drawn ones. So...

13. RP somewhere else instead =\

15. I enjoyed ranma 1/2 and for some reason never mentally classified it as a harem anime even tho it clearly is. Also, that whole paragraph about the horrible misrepresentation of women makes me wonder if get get all self righteously pissy over things like Fushigi Yuugi or. Hell. Any anime ever where men are emasculated or made nothing but mindless sex fiends.

20. ....who were the characters?

22. I'm not sure a genuinely kind person would enjoy treating others badly under an anonymous guise. Maybe you're just a regular semi-sadistic person who can't be a pretentious asshole to people's faces? There is a quote I saw the other day that went something like "You character is what you are when no one else is looking".

13. Unfortunately that's easier said than done :\

ONE ONE HAND I think you should tell your circle of friends to shove it! Playing with characters who DON'T have perfect personalities, NAY, MAY EVEN BE INCREDIBLY ANNOYING is awesome. =\ The whole idea of RP is to see characters interact, it's dumb to say WE WON'T INTERACT WITH ANNOYING PERSONALITIES.

But. since sometimes one should not tell one's friends to shove it. Why? There are a horde of RPs out there and the majority of them have fairly easy acceptance.

Hahah, I'd feel kinda bad about telling them to shove it D: Even if I sort of want to.

It's hard for me to want to migrate somewhere else because another game might not have all the same characters my friends play. Blah blah etc. etc. I love playing off of them, I just want that one character as well in our storyline :(

[identity profile] aviy.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
*nod* I understand. I'm only in multi-fandom RP myself, but I can see the appeal of wanting to play with certain characters, or the ever present "What if the other players SUCK" fear! If they're you're friends maybe you can talk them into it. I don't know the character, but he does have some depth, I'd assume? Yah yah, preachy bastard, but as long as he's human on a level another character could connect with, your friends might find they enjoy playing with him afterall. Hell, I play Ticky Mikk, who'se crazy and evil! But one of my favorite charcters because he still has the humanity to make friends, understand people's problems, and have real conversations beyond "hay killing you would be fun".

As I said in another comment, it's more like I'm being brutally honest. Don't worry, I won't turn into a real troll. I'm far too classy for that. ^.~ How ironic for me to think being an anonymous asshole is classy~

Yes, I'm a little sadistic, but I enjoy being nice to people far more than I enjoy being brutally honest or mean. That's why I won't just be a jerk on here.

But I will be pretentious, and how.

I'm perfectly secure in that fact that I am a genuine, kind person. This is just a role.

Out of sheer curiousity, do you mind if I ask how old you are?

Sorry for the late response. Just so happens that the only day in months that I haven't been able to check f!s is the day my (apparently) not-so-sordid secret was posted. :/

I tried to get everyone who frequented this comm in there, if only a cameo appearance. I scoured pages of comments to make sure of it, so if you've posted regularly here for a while it's pretty much guaranteed you've got a spot. The other reason I won't divulge that story is because I don't want to disappoint anybody, just in case I missed someone.

I'd list the cast, but... that would be a pretty long list, if I were to cite every person whose face I showed in there. xD

O, I wouldn't be on it. I've only started following this comm recently and only commented a handful of time. I was just curious as to how that would work >D I do think you should post it anonymously or something, just for kicks. But even if you don't, I think it's neat. I don't... really believe in being ashamed of writing |D

With all the response it's gotten, I just might. I never really expected this many people would respond to me, especially not with "POST IT PLEASE," but now that I'm actually thinking about it... it's not that surprising. Who wouldn't want to be a character in someone else's story, after all?

(If I were to post though, then I'd need to edit the hell out of it first. Like I said, it's collecting dust--I haven't touched it since I pronounced it finished. I could probably add you in if you wanted... probably not as a character, but a faceflash or something wouldn't be too hard to do.)
