I have, and honestly I didn't think it was very good.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this referring to The Difference Engine? Because, man, don't bother, that's a fucking terrible book.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you nonnies, now I don't feel so bad. I always harboured this fear, and I think that's why I never dove in. It was either going to be *so* *great* it would go totally over my head, or so awful that it wouldn't, and I didn't want to find out, either way.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
...And which book is it? Come on, OP!

the difference engine is okay. it's more notable for codifying a lot of the tropes of steampunk as we know it today.

i absolutely prefer the neuromancer trilogy, but that's because 80% of my brain looks like blade runner.

...the fuck does Neuromancer have to do with steampunk?

they're from the same author? don't be dense.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Still ain't steampunk.

never said it was.

Sooo if this secret was like, "I love sci-fi but I've never read Foundation," and I was like, "I prefer Asimov's Guide to the Bible," that wouldn't seem at all non-sequitur?

You've read Neuromancer, apparently; look up the historical relationship between cyberpunk and steampunk as literary movements in sometime, and note the commonality of authors in the earliest days. They have common roots.

i think you're asking too much of anon.

OP

Hey, thanks, I reread the Sprawl Trilogy every few years, glad to know I'm not alone. Sorry you got flamed by a nonny. D-:

it happens :)

So is the book a secret? A super secret code only other steampunk people will get? A way to subtly weed out the unworthy?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
MTE.

I mean, now there is reverse image search, but it still feels like a coded message for a secret club of science fiction and/or steampunk fanatics.

I like steampunk clothing, but I have no desire to read The Difference Engine. The number of books I can read in my lifetime is limited, so I feel no obligation to wade through mediocre prose before putting on a pair of goggles.

Am I the only person here who really liked The Difference Engine? Really?

I mean, admittedly, I'm in the "steampunk, whatevs" camp - I don't hate on it, I just don't care much - but I quite enjoyed the book.

Mediocre is a bit unfair, "workmanlike prose" is what I mean.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
There was a moment where I thought this said, "womanlike prose," and I was kind of offended.

[personal profile] solarbird 2012-08-23 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. It just seems everyone's so down on it, and I don't see why. I mean, it's not BEST NOVEL EVAR material, but I found it a nice lark and pleasantly atmospheric.

Huh. There's something mandatory to enjoying steampunk other than appreciating steam engines, Victorian everyland, goggles, and endless gears on everything? Whatevs.

I was surprised two of my favorite authors could get together and write a book that was so absolutely dull to read.

........well now I have to look up this book to see if it's as horrible as most of FS seems to think.
