What groceries should I buy today?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm down to half an onion, butter and some bread. Time to go shopping!

So far my list includes;
Cheese
Avocado
Turkish Delight

Then I'm at a loss. I've been independent for 7 years now, you think I could have mastered shopping and food. I just don't caaaarrreeee but I have to eat.
It's like grinding in a game. I HATE IT, but necessary

How much ready made stuff does your local store have? Could you buy like, macaroni or ravoli, or ramen? That's usually how I get around having a meal but not wanting to work too hard at it.

I'm not sure. There's stuff in the frozen section but it's always giant family sized things. They rearranged recently, maybe it will be better now.

I stopped eating random after my first year of independence(tm) was only it. I got soooo sick and now I can't look at it. Heartbreaking :(

You should always have dried spaghetti, olive oil, red pepper flakes and a bulb of garlic. (To make Spaghetti with Oil and Garlic (Aglio Et Olio)

The dish is incredibly easy to make and it will become your "I need comfort food NOW" to go meal. I love it.

I didn't realise dried spaghetti was a thing. I learnt something new today. :D

I think the commenter meant the boxed spaghetti in the staples section, the stuff most of us grew up just calling spaghetti--as opposed to fresh pasta which is found in the cooler.

I don't have any suggestions but MAN AM I GLAD I'M NOT ALONE.

Seriously I'm twenty five and supermarkets still make me want to cry. I hate foodshopping so fucking much.

Pasta? Couscous? Pita bread and hummus? Those are my go-to non-functioning adult who has to feed herself staples. Also fruit.

Re: What groceries should I buy today?

Cooking is just so boring and I HATE walking into the store and trying to work out what I may or may not want to eat. I'm not even huge on eating most of the time.

Then they rearrange the store so I spend more time than I want just looking for the coffee and sugar.fffffffffffffffff

Food is boring argh.

I will definitely grab whatever fruit is on sale. Probably bananas or something. SEE, I EAT HEALTHY MUM

Re: What groceries should I buy today?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, me too on the cooking. And the having to spend more time in the store than required, haha. I don't know where I picked up this hatred of everything related to feeding myself like a fucking grownup, but there we are.

I basically eat a lot of salads, vegetables, shit that goes in the microwave, basically anything that will take me less than five minutes to prepare because I CAN NOT BE BOTHERED. I'll eat pretty much anything anyone else has prepared for me, though. Unfortunately now that I live alone that never happens anymore.

This whole exchange reminds me of this Dinosaur Comic: http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=2260

See: Man tries to substitute monkey kibble for food because he hates food shopping.

WELL I actually meant the frozen MEAL section but sure, if you want all the ice cream I don't see what's stopping you!

If you eat meat, get yourself a big roast or a flat-iron steak that you can cook up and use of across a variety of recipes. Also rice, bell pepper of your color choosing, mushrooms, sour cream (great for if you want to make a stroganoff or something. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are easy to prepare. You could also look into a variety of canned and frozen goods. I primarily buy frozen vegetables (peas, corn, broccoli) and canned beans (black beans are my favorite -- and make a great refried bean sauce).

Might I also direct you to two of my favorite sites:
Sorted Food, which does amazing videos that make cooking look simple. Though, if you're in the US, you'll have to convert from metric/celsius (but given that you're buying Turkish Delight, I'll assume you're not.)

Big Girls, Small Kitchen, which has a ton of great recipes that can be indexed by everything from meal type, cuisine and main ingredient to when you're low on money, skill, space and time.

For the record, I've made some chinese-ish dishes off of Sorted Food that were just as good (and loads healthier) than anything I could have purchased frozen. I had the same experience inventing my own Chicken Helper-ish mexican rice. Cooking from fresh/frozen separate ingredients will make just as good -- if not better -- food than anything you could buy in a boxed or as a complete frozen meal for a fraction of the cost once you've built up a pantry. And once you get used to it, it won't take terribly longer, either.

My basic grocery list:

Pancake mix
Milk
Eggs
Bread
Basic veggies (tomato, pepper, onion, garlic, lettuce)
Fruits (green apple, orange, banana)
Canned tuna
Tomato sauce
Pasta
Ground beef/ham

I try buy stuff that I can use in other dishes so I don't eat the same shit and is cheap...But usually I end up eating the same shit anyway because I'm lazy :( lol.

Eggs are always good. You can make a lot of things with eggs.

Also: Garlic and MOAR ONIONS. It's a good base for anything you kinda want to stir fry.

Okay FS, with your help I am off to buy assorted foods with at least a couple of things from everyone (provided I can find it. Curse these stores). I'll probably buy enough in bulk for the next week or so.

Urgh food.

So, what did you end up buying?

Re: What groceries should I buy today?

A jar of peanut butter. It's so versatile--add it to pasta, green onions, red peppers, other veggies, garlic and any stir-fry sauce to make a delicious pasta dish, have it on bread, on a spoon, melt it over ice cream, use it to make marinades...

And marmalade--you can use it exactly the same as peanut butter. Adds depth and sweetness to a stir-fry, and deliciousness to everything else.

ummmmm...milk is a good thing to have, as are noodles of any kind.

What else do you need? Toast the bread, top with thinly sliced cheese, avocado, and caramelized onions, follow with turkish delight.

BTW, don't trust any caramelized onion recipe that takes less than 45 minutes.

This advice has been brought to you by someone who ate raw broccoli for dinner last night because it was too hot in the kitchen to cook.

I don't really care for any caramelized onion recipe that doesn't only take 10 minutes, come on! All you really need is a good cooking oil, salt and perhaps balsamic vinegar. Pepper is optional. And that open-faced sandwich does sound pretty good. :9

fiber and protein!

I always get apples, broccoli, hummus, chicken breasts, and milk.

fav dish when I don't know what to have is chicken + block of frozen spinach + alfredo sauce over pasta.

also chicken + marmalade + whole grain mustard + heavy cream + herbs du Provence over noodles. steamed carrots on the side.

eggs, and eating breakfast for dinner, always works and can be a mood booster. hell, I had an egg the other morning as I was craving it and it perked me up. I eat it with toast and melon (see - protein and fiber).

if all else fails, soup. I do make my own though, including stock. made broccoli soup the other day, and at Target they had a bunch of the non-condensed soups on sale.

happy eating.
