Canon Vs. Fanon

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm in the Merlin fandom and I ship Arthur/Merlin like mad. But I think I might be the only person who actually doesn't want it to ever happen in canon. I like Arthur and Gwen together, and it would be weird as fuck (and possibly derail the whole point of the show) if Arthur and Merlin actually got romantically involved in the series. It's just a fantasy I like to indulge in.

The thing is, I usually feel this way. I like canon the way it is. Am I the only one?

Realistically I know it will never happen and I'm fine with that. I don't even mind Gwen, sure she could use some character development but I don't hate her.

I prefer the Mod AU fics to canon ones anyway.

Nope! I love fanon and fanfic. But I wouldn't want any of that to be part of canon.

/unless canon is problematic or skimpy on important details and fanon makes up for that. then i wish hard :(

There is a LOT of stuff that I love in fic that I think wouldn't work in canon. They are too separate worlds, man.

Yeah. There's a place for things that are AU, or are great in fic but wouldn't work in canon. There's a lot of things I like that I wish WERE canon, buuuuuut I definitely ship a lot of things that I wouldn't like to see in canon, too.

I... wouldn't say I like canon the way it is, but I'm perfectly content for Arthur and Merlin's bromance to stay bromantic. I just want it to be handled a bit better! And yeah canon A/M at this point would be blatant fanservice.

AYRT

I definitely second wishing they would handle it a bit better. Mostly I think Merlin just needs to reveal his magic already (like, 2 seasons ago would have been great?).

Oh yes a magical reveal would be awesome. Plus less of the completely inane banter. I have no issue with banter in general but when it does nothing to develop or display their relationship... yeahhh.

Re: Canon Vs. Fanon

Indeed. It's just incredibly lazy writing, IMO. The inane banter is a fallback so they don't have to write something that actually takes thought and effort. Same thing with Gwen's lack of real characterization and Morgana's descent into one-dimensionalness.

Oh man I think 'lazy' is the best possible word for it. But to go back to the point of this thread, lack of canon M/A is not the problem. xD

I don't always like canon the way it is but ship wise I more often than not don't want my favorite ships to become show. Because a lot of the shows I watch have a tendency to screw romantic relationships up badly. And I dunno, I think it could never be as good as what fans came up with.

There are only a few things I ship which I would ever want to actually become canon. Most of them, no, I'm fine with them sticking to fanon although I would like them to be written a bit more than they are.

Re: Canon Vs. Fanon

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm like that, too. I can only think of a few ships I'd actually want to become canon, and they're all situations where the characters are basically a couple already and it would change things very little, if at all, if they were 'officially' together. But of course, they're all pairings that are 'unconventional' in some way and would never actually become canon due to homophobic/otherwise narrow-minded showrunners/creators/whatever.

Nope!

I like canon to stay canon, and I feel kind of weird when they start shoving fanon in to please the shippers. (Example: The second Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ.)

Most of my ships are just stuff I know won't ever happen in canon. That's why I read fic in the first place - to find stuff that isn't in canon. Like the extras on a DVD.

This is how I feel about Kirk and Spock. Lovelovelovelove it in fic. Would absolutely despise it in canon, and it would totally destroy the purposeful distance and barriers and subtlety of their relationship. I'm not one of those people who goes "but making them a couple makes their friendship less puuuuuurrrre" or any bullcrap like that, but in this very specific instance....I just can't see Kirk and Spock acting the way they do in the series or the films if they were secretly fucking and in a romantic relationship, without totally ruining the meaning of a LOT of scenes where it's clear Kirk is carefully teasing minute traces of of emotion and vulnerability and affection beyond professionalism out of Spock for the very first time.

I could see them being in love on a very, very slow burn, and then finally getting together when they're both old post-Undiscovered Country, though. That would be nice :)

I'm the same way with a lot of things. I prefer my favorite ships to remain in fanon because then if I read a fic and don't like the direction that the author takes it, I can just stop reading a pick another one without having to abandon the fandom. If it becomes canon and I don't like the way it's written, I'm either stuck with that interpretation or I have to stop watching.

Nope, not at all! I like canon for what canon gives me. I like fandom for what fandom gives me, and never the twain shall meet.

Thing is, in fic, it's okay to totally derail the story and take it off on a tangent, because next fic comes along, and it all resets. But canon, once you go somewhere you can't really take it back. Unless your canon is something like Spongebob, where every episode is it's own continuity.

This is really such a very good point.
