maybe try http://www.glarysoft.com ?? i've never used it before but it might be worth a shot.

if that doesn't work, system restore would, provided you have a recent enough restoration point.

Thanks. I'll try this one out.

System restore won't work for me. My laptop is a piece of mess that hasn't let me save restore points for ages.

I'm facing facts that I probably won't get my stuff back and just going to take it as lesson learned to back my stuff up ASAP next time.

yeah my laptop is awful too. a couple of weeks ago i noticed it decided to magically delete all the content from some of my writing-related documents, so yeah that was a bundle of fun.

hopefully you get your stuff back though!
