Hair cutting advice

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've never actually gone to a professional place to get my hair cut, I've always just cut it myself. But the time has come. What's the etiquette for this? Am I suppose to chat with the person cutting my hair? Do I tip? Am I supposed to have an exact idea of hair cut?

I chat with mine if they chat with me. You can get a talker or not. It all just depends on who you get.

I do tip.

You should have an idea of what you want, yes. Unless you're looking for their advice. For example, do you want a trim or a whole new style? If it's the latter look in magazines for something you like. If you are very lost talk to your hairdresser and ask them what they think would look good on you. You can then decide on haircut with her guidance and input.

Re chatting: most hairdressers I've had have made small talk but they've generally stopped when I don't really reciprocate. I don't think you're obliged to chat if you don't want to.

You can chat, but you're not required to. Hairdressers will generally be pretty good at keeping a conversation going--it's kind of "part of the job," if you will--but if you don't want to chit-chat, you don't have to. They generally have magazines to read if you'd rather not talk, or you could bring a book or something. That sends a pretty clear message of "I'd rather not chit-chat, thanks."

Assuming you're in the States, you should tip. Think 10-20%.

Generally it's good to have some idea of what kind of cut you want, but many hairstylists will be willing to go over options with you if you ask for advice. If you want a different style (as opposed to a trim), bringing in photographs of hairstyles you're considering might help. Also be willing to consider different styles based on your type of hair (obviously, some styles work better for some types of hair than others). Keep in mind that some hairstylists are better at this than others. My hairstylist is absolutely fantastic--he sees my entire extended family, and we run the gamut from "thin and straight as a board" to "Jew fro"--but some aren't as flexible. It's okay to try multiple different people until you find someone you're satisfied with.

I feel bad for the people who cut my hair if they normally chat with their customers... I have to take my hearing aids off to get a hair cut which means I can't hear anything they're saying! I also take my glasses off so I can hardly see them as well.
