I think I heard in a discussion of YA/children's literature once that the genre is full of incompetent, excessively skeptical, or outright hostile adults, because otherwise, generally, the kids wouldn't be in the thick of the action saving the day.

Funny thing is, there are ways to isolate the kids and get them to act on their own without resorting to those things; you just need to think a little outside the box and double-check your plans to make sure there aren't plot-holes.
