Has anyone in the HS fandom noticed this?

[personal profile] streetcake 2012-08-23 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay so I remember a while back there was a lot of arguing on tumblr about sexuality erasure in the Homestuck fandom in regards to Kanaya and later Dirk. Many people I stalked were very strict that you absolutely could not put a gay character in a romantic relationship with a character of the opposite sex, not even if you were queer yourself or even if it was only as moirails.

After a while the arguments died down and so much time had passed that I had forgotten all about it. But now, there seems to be this new wave of unapologetic shipping of Kanaya with boys and Dirk with girls...and a lot of it is coming from the people who were protesting it in the first place!

That's the part that confuses me. There was no transition between vigorously protesting against it to it suddenly being totally okay and enjoying it themselves. From saying that images of Karkat<>Kanaya needed trigger warnings to reblogging pictures of Kanaya making out or having sex with other dudes. Was there a meeting or something? I'm so confused.

...People are naturally hypocrites?

yup, this

add to it that for some odd reason people HATE being wrong, and even more admitting or being proven that they did, said or thought something that was wrong

baffles me, but it's best to roll with it and try to not do it yourself

I don't know a lot about homestuck, but I thought trolls in general didn't really give a fuck about gender? As a troll, is kanaya capable of being a straight up lesbian? (did hussy state that she was one or something?)

Either way, I don't see the big deal of shipping characters with whomever you want. Hell, I ship Kurt/Rachel (Does this make me a bad gay person? idc)

It's not about whether it's right or wrong, I'm just asking if anyone else has noticed in the tumblr fandom that it's more acceptable to ship those pairings now than it was months ago.

Hussie has said that trolls very rarely have preference for one gender, but they don't label it because it's not a big deal (and they don't understand our concepts of 'gay' or 'straight'), and that Kanaya is one of these and is probably the closest a troll can get to being a lesbian.

But yeah, I also tend to ship based on chemistry, and characters just default to fluid in my mind.

basically this. maybe they smartened up and realised that kanaya isn't inherently a lesbian just because she expressed interest in vriska, and listened to dirk when he essentially said he doesn't really care about gender (at least that's what i got out of it).

I've just noticed a lot of Dirk/Jane lately, but I'm not sure if that's a reaction to all the Jane hate or if it's just because I'm following some new people. I'm also relatively new to the fandom so I don't feel qualified to compare it.

...people seriously got upset about moirail shipping with regard to Kanaya etc? wtf. That seems a bit crazy. I get that it's a form of troll romance, but it seems like if there was a troll who had a gender preference, it still wouldn't matter so much when it came to moirails.

Anyway it's probably due to hypocrisy, yeah, but maybe they just realised it wasn't that big a deal, acknowledged they were wrong and moved on? Unless they didn't say anything, just suddenly started shipping.

I mean, personally I'm only really interested in shipping Kanaya and Dirk with folks of the same gender, but I'm not going to kick up a fuss at other people shipping them in het pairings. People are allowed to ship what they want because in most cases the ships are purely hypothetical anyway! It would only really be erasure if Hussie decided to pair them up with people of the opposite gender, imo. (Unless Dirk was just bisexual I guess. Though everyone would probably kick up a fuss anyway) (and I just used the phrase kick up a fuss twice, what am I doing)
