All of this. And the fact is, most of the Batman villains could not be realized in our world, so Nolan didn't want to use them.

I think it helps to keep in my mind how over the top the Schumacher movies were (whether for good or ill), and remember that that's what Nolan was reacting against. It certainly wasn't perfect, but it was a fully - realized vision of what he wanted Batman to be.
