YES. THANK YOU. I thought we were FINALLY rid of him after last season's finale so I was so pissed when they brought him back. Was he really necessary? His screentime could have gone to Leena, who's been there since the BEGINNING and still has whole episodes where she doesn't even show up. Ugh.

Point is, I agree with you, OP. I never got what was so ~special about their friendship that Claudia went all Dark!Claudia just to bring him back. Hell, you didn't see Myka going crazypants like that over HG's death, and they were supposedly "in love."

Leena can't act to save her life so I think it's good she's mostly a background character.

Steve's character is okay but the whole death plot was a bit unnecessary for a character we were just introduced to. His whole "betrayal" and then death happened way too quickly, if they wanted it to matter to the audience it needed to be a character who had been around for longer or at least they could have waited another season to do it.

Different strokes, then. I love Leena and think there's nothing wrong with her acting. Steve's character was completely unnecessary and he's still a complete blank slate to me (all I know is that he's gay and can tell when people are lying. Hardly deep characterization).

And what's Leena's deep characterization? She can sense people's auras, which is barely used in the show anymore, and she's sometimes motherly.

I personally think she's more bland than Steve. Plus she never seemed like she'd be much use for artifact hunting because she doesn't even have any government training like Pete, Myka, and Steve have, or a special skill like Claudia's mad tech skills.

They actually just went into this recently, and I liked it for this exact reason - she has a knack for knowing which artifacts will 'react' to other artifacts, and which can be stored together safely. Handy trait for the person who handles inventory, which is her main task.

If she were going out in the field on a regular basis with no training or qualifications, that would indeed be strange, but she's suited for the job she does and content with it.

To me, looking back, it feels like that was being set up from the moment he was introduced on the show - since it all happened over the course of one season, presumably the plot arc was already in place - hence why they had to quickly bond him with Claudia to explain her reactions to his 'betrayal' and 'death'.

Granted, plot-dictated relationships like that can work if the participants have chemistry, and just like with romantic pairings, some people see it and some people don't.

I will say that I'm glad to see her given plenty of time to interact with other characters (Pete, Mrs. Frederic) in recent episodes; this secret was largely inspired by my frustration when she threw the fit about not being partnered with him All The Time.

I like Leena, but frankly I'd be just as happy to see his screentime given to Trai.

Yeah that's actually what I thought as well, once that plot was set into motion it became obvious that was why they even introduced Steve in the first place. They for whatever reason didn't think any of the regulars would fit for that plot, so they had to introduce a new agent.

It can work, and it can even work quickly, but I think Warehouse 13 just didn't quite get it.

Thinking of it now I actually think this plot would have made more sense if it was Claudia's brother who became an agent instead. Her extreme emotional reaction would make more sense that way (actually my justification for Claudia's reaction to Steve is basically that she sees him as a brother replacement.)

Hmm... I'm a fan of Steve but I really like the idea of Claudia's brother being an agent. I mean, geez, we haven't seen the guy since the Christmas episode? They could bring him back every now and then at least. But yeah, he could have been a great agent since he's just as brainy as Claudia. Even if he wasn't a premanent agent like Steve, they could have brought him back enough times to establish his character and his relationship with Claudia, then have him be drafted to do that fake betrayal thing with the bad guy.

Okay, the more I'm thinking about this now, the more I'm bummed it didn't happen :P
