Admittedly, trying to figure out what had made a half-Vulcan want to sex his student (guaranteed to be against the rules!) sends me for a bit of a loop. They were super public for such an illegal relationship, too.

...She could do better. Like, say, her roommate. Who's probably dead. But before her roommate was dead, and maybe after--much more shippable.

Don't know where you're getting "illegal." Unless Starfleet Academy has explicit rules against student/teacher relationships, there's nothing that would be in the way of Uhura and Spock having a relationship. If she's old enough to be a college graduate (as is usual for an academy-type situation) and he's experienced enough to be a teacher, we can safely assume they're of legal age, and since Spock is half-human we can assume there are no law against aliens and humans intermarrying in the Federation.

Whether it's ethical for a student and teacher to date is another question, and the one I think would actually have an interesting answer from Spock, unless he'd somehow argue that ethics are not logical, which, no.

Every school on the planet has rules against teachers hooking up with their students. I imagine Spock's ass would be curbside if that got out.

It's a military organization where he outranks her AND a school where he's her teacher. If there weren`t rules about that, I`d be shocked.

she WAS one of his top students. Past tense.
We don't know if they started their relationship then or later when she became a teacher assistant (so, more a co-worker than his student as she wasn't his student anymore by that point) and he's like 1 second older than her anyway

uhm his human side and the physical part of his person? lol
half-vulcan doesn't mean half dead.
His father fell in love and married a human woman against all the odds as well and he was more vulcan than Spock.
I always had the feeling vulcan's love is even deeper than human's, don't they mate for life?
In all honesty, these arguments about the logic of love make me wonder about what kind of couple can actually make sense according to some people.
That he went against the rules for her should, alone, say a lot about the deep nature of his feelings for her. Love is out of control by definition.
I do think that Spock needed that, he needed to find something or someone that challenged his vulcan control.
