[Spyro the Dragon]

I feel the same way. I'm so completely fail at newer PS games that I ended up buying and downloading the first two (and three soon, I suspect) just to play them and prove to myself that I could be excellent at the *right* video games.

(I'm never gonna touch the newer Spyro games though.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The GBA games (Season of Ice, Season of Fire, Spyro's Adventure/Attack of the Rhynocs) would be fun if it wasn't for the isometric view making some jumps all but guesswork.

I haven't played Fusion/Cortex's Wrath (?).

Enter: The Dragonfly is mediocre but kind of fun if you have the patience of a saint.

A Hero's Tail is surprisingly fun (and it finally has the grabbing on to ledges feature and double jump that was missing from the original trilogy), but it's harder than I remember it being and I keep dying so often and I'm terrible at managing gems and power-ups so I can't keep going. :(

Of the reboot trilogy, I have heard good things, but only played part of the first on the NDS. I naively picked the hard difficulty and it kicked my ass for it. OTL. But! It was very fun and I think I would have enjoyed it greatly at a lesser difficulty. My main gripe at the time was that "it's not like the original trilogy, wah!!"

I have no idea what Skylanders is like. Obviously a ploy to sell toys, but for all I know it might actually be good or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and there was Shadow Legacy, I think? For the NDS. I kept meaning to pick it up and I never did. I have no idea what it's like.

Who is this fucker? I don't know him

hahaha yeah i grew up playing spyro, i feel the same way whenever i see new advertisements. who is this sly-ass motherfucker.

the worlds were really something, though. i don't know if it's my nostalgia goggles but i LOVED exploring in spyro.

This was like 9 years ago so I don't even remember the site, but I remember finding a page/site by one of the designers/painters of the team, and he explained how they put a lot of effort into choosing the moods and backgrounds and even styles that went with each level/world.

It was very pretty and interesting to see, and it made me appreciate how much work it takes to make nice games.

I'll see if I can find it -- I hope it's not gone!

Oh god, OP, Spyro Ripto's Rage was one of the only video games I've ever completed. They're also the only games I would really plug in and play right now in my Playstation since I basically have no other games as good as Spyro even a decade later.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I bought a second hand PS2 for myself for my 22nd birthday JUST so I could buy the first three Spyro games. I've never been able to afford a PS3 or XBOX so I suck at modern games from lack of practice, but old Spyro comes naturally to me - like riding a bike!

re: the newer games:
My copy of Enter the Dragonfly is somehow damaged so the Boss fights never come up. I've completed it as far as I can but it will never get to 100% cos of that glitch :(
New Beginning and Eternal Night are ok.... I still prefer exploring and collecting rather than fighting.
I haven't played Dawn of the Dragon but I REALLY want to because of FREE FLIGHT. DREAMS COME TRUE. One day I'll get it, I guess.
GBA games: alright, I suppose. The perspective sometimes fucks with my eyes. The Crash Bandicoot/Spyro Fusion games are awful, don't bother.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The new Spyro is so fug looking, I just don't get it. One day I'll cave and give it a try though. He's face is just too craggy for now.

And talking Sparx throws me off my game! He's supposed to buzz at most!

Annnnd my Spyro nostalgia continues. Two secrets that take me back! In one night! DEAR GODS!

I'm not quite in the same boat as you, as I enjoy almost any sort of game, but dear Jesus I loved Spyro. Seems like the old games get a bad rap now, but in the '90s, they were where it was at (them and Jersey Devil. Anyone remember that game? I seriously adored it).

I LOVE the original Spyro trilogy! I've kept my PS1 just to replay them every once in awhile; they are never not fun. I'm pretty terrible at just about every other game, but I just really enjoy wandering around looking for things in those wonderful Spyro worlds and solving those silly little puzzles. :)

I was kind of disappointed with the new game too; I enjoyed being able to fly like that, but Spyro shouldn't be angsty and I hated both not being able to go back and explore and how it seemed to be more of a button-mashing fighting game.

Huh. I never played Spyro. It's interesting how much it shapes our gaming history and perspectives, what console we buy. I was raised on Nintendo and when I was a kid barely realized that other video game companies were a Thing. (That being said, if you're looking for games, OP, I would recommend the Zelda franchise, just in case you haven't tried it. Puzzle and adventure games, [mostly] non-platformer, very very few timed missions, no FPS play unless you count like the bow and shit but they usually target for you, and just overall great art, music, gameplay, story, etc. imo.)

ETA: you can get PC roms for all of the older ones.

I loved Wind Waker, although I tried the first NES game and it keeps murdering me. I'll try for the more forgiving ones.

My favorite is Twilight Princess (icon relevant), though it's one of the darker ones. Ocarina of Time is a great classic and I know you can get it on rom. I've played a little bit of the first game but didn't get very far (maybe three dungeons?) - keep meaning to go back, and also play more of the earlier/handheld games, like A Link to the Past which is supposed to be fantastic.

:D

I could never master Spyro, that damn camera was my downfall every time. Devil May Cry was what spoiled me - my specialty lies in killing things in absurd and flashy ways, not jumping on shit or shooting things very very carefully.

Spyro games were awesome! Although they didn't quite affect me as they affected the OP. I haven't tried any of the newer games, though. I tried one for GBA and... well, it sucked. :( Ripto's Rage will always be my favourite.

OP, I think you should try a game with similar characteristics to the Spyro games. A user before me suggested the Zelda games - there's a lot of exploration in those, plus puzzles and little to zero timed missions. Some RPGs also have quite a lot of exploration to do - I think some Final Fantasy games do. Kingdom Hearts also has a fair amount of exploration and its gameplay is similar to Spyro. I've also recently played a few Lego games and they're really fun - the gameplay is, again, similar to Spyro, there's some exploration and a free play mode that allows you to re-play the levels with other characters in order to complete the game 100%.

I'm sure you will be able to find a game you love, OP! :)

I'm a forty-year-old who has always failed at every sort of video game on the planet. Started with Pac-Man, which I was so bad at I was too embarrassed to even play it in front of others at the roller rink. But my niece got the first Spyro when it came out, and she was very frustrated when she couldn't get things right, so I would play bits of it to encourage her, and I got hooked on it and, with the help of a guidebook, I won that darn thing. It was NOT easy, probably took me at least three times longer than most who did it (I have no depth perception, and my hand-eye coordination is shit as a result - many things from my childhood were explained when I found this out. There was a reason I couldn't play all those games, or figure out when to catch the softball that was heading straight towards me. Eureka!)

Anyway, Spyro IS special. No other game has come close to interesting me like it did, and I still miss it.
