Why did everyone take the "Merlin was totally a Slytherin! *eyebrow waggle*" bit the Prefect said to the First Years seriously?

I thought the Slytherins had obviously made it up, but everyone is coming away with the opposite interpretation and now I'm wondering if I'm the one who is wrong.

Sorted Slytherin at Pottermore and I can tell you that bit definitely tripped my BS sensor too. Strikes me as the exact sort of thing they'd claim. What other famous wizard are they going to lay claim to who was provably in their House and wouldn't damage the rep? ...Exactly.
