does this warrant a trigger warning?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, this is probably more me whining than anything. The other day on tumblr I saw some fanart that had a girl hugging the boy she had an unrequited crush on and he didn't look very into it, and it had a trigger warning for consent issues. I clicked the tag and this person just...had the weirdest stufff tagged with that. There was a thread w/ her having a conversation with someone and at the end she jokingly does a *flashes MIB forgetter thing* or whatever it's called, and she had a trigger warning for consent issues on that.

Am I insensitive in thinking that's totally unnecessary?

*snerk*

Well, at least they're careful. It's always better to be safe than sorry, although IMO that's taking it a bit too far in the safe direction. . .

That made me think of this.

Safe is good, but that strikes me as a little...excessive? I know it's better to warn than not even if you're being a little overcautious, but for hugs?

Lol that video... I actually prefer using two condoms. Don't wanna get preggers.

You're not meant to do that though. The condoms can't handle the friction and are more likely to break.

...annnnnd that's why people make fun of trigger warnings and say they're for pansies. great.

The girl hugging the boy who didn't want it I can *almost* understand, if only because a friend of mine in high school ended up needing a restraining order on this girl who was obsessed with him. It started out as a run-of-the-mill crush, but it quickly escalated and it ended with her trying to kill his pet cat to get him to pay attention to her. It was pretty fucked-up. Granted, I haven't seen the art and I'll bet dollars to donuts it was harmless, but that kind of thing does tend to put up warning flags to me, if only because I've seen that kind of situation go nuclear first-hand. The last thing I want to do is come off as SJW, though, and it's probably nothing like that situation, but overly-clingy people creep me out (it's part of the reason I really hate the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme, because that girl was more or less exactly like her)

But the MIB forgetter thing? Yeah... that's kind of ridiculous.

I could understand how the hug could be problematic in that way if it were depicted as forceful or uncomfortable, but the actual picture wasn't that bad.

She was just hugging him and looking sadly/longingly up at him and he was looking off over her head at nothing without much of an expression. It was more sad and awkward than forced or creepy.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought, just thought I would get clarification.

In that case, yeah, there's no need for a trigger warning.

I've heard about people flipping out over the MiB flashy thing because it could be used to cover up something non-consensual. Which is an incredibly creepy idea, if you think about it.

By that logic, we should have to warn for heavy sleepers. Or buying produce at farmer's markets. I mean, who knows who did what to that pear you're gonna eat?

I'm not big on warning. I'll warn for the obvious major triggers, but not much beyond that. Warning for situations in which something could potentially happen, even if it doesn't, seems really excessive and unnecessary.

Pears aren't generally known for causing amnesia, though?

Anyway, I agree that it's not something I would expect to see a trigger warning on. But I can see why someone might decide to use one, especially if they happen to know someone who is seriously freaked out by the idea of deliberately induced memory loss.

The trigger warning for the hug almost seems stranger to me. But that could just be because my imagination isn't syncing up with the actual image -- there's a difference between "not into it" and "upset by it", and hugs can range from barely touching to "dear god how many hands do you have?!?"

If we're going to warn for situations where things could potentially harm you without your knowing about it, I mean, some criminal mastermind could inject drugs into your pear and then you eat it, and who knows?

Anyway...

I'm not a hugging type (social anxiety, yay) so my feelings range from mild discomfort to outright dread, depending on who the person is and in what situation. I still wouldn't consider it a trigger worthy of warning, though.

Eh, it's one thing if it actually happens like that.

But if not...

On the other hand, that's not the worst idea

Goddamn it, I'm not going to write MIB rape fic tonight, I'm not!

No! not this time!

I'd have comic K and J rape movie K and J. And nobody knows about comic K and J so it wouldn't be well recieved.

Pfft.

No one would remember. That's the entire point.

Oh, wait. You mean the people reading it?

Because let's just be honest here, I have a fondness for violent non-con, and IDGAF who it's written about.

Charge on, brave knight.

[flash]

but you already read it, don't you remember?

Re: does this warrant a trigger warning?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There'd be no point in warning about the flashy thing, though, because it's just part of the MiB mythos and anyone familiar with MiB ought to know that. People who are disturbed or triggered by the potential of the flashy thing should just avoid MiB entirely, both fic and canon.

Now, if you wrote MiB fic with rape or other non-consensual acts, regardless of whether the flashy thing was involved - then that should be warned for, just like you would warn for rape in fic in any other fandom. Warning just for the flashy thing when it isn't used in a problematic way is like writing Star Trek fic and warning for transporters.

No. People over think this.

Not to mention it runs the risk of spoiling the goddamn story half the time.

Would you happen to be talking about http://orb01.tumblr.com? Idk, I think this issue is more YMMV. I love their art so much!
