For the fandom I assume your talking about, I think it's worked out pretty well for everyone. It's created buzz for the show, and Jeff Davis and the actors have been rather nice to the shippers. I like that they see us as a good thing, not a bunch of insane people. Davis doesn't seem like the type to do entire plots pandering to the fans, so I don't worry that he's going to look at all of the fanfic for this MTV contest and get ideas from it (I doubt he's going to look at that fanfic at all, as an MTV intern will probably be reading it).

For RPF, the fourth wall NEEDS to stay up. I've always thought this, and the recent going on in One Direction fandom have just made me even more passionate about this stance. For fictional stuff, it's a case by case basis, though.

Yeah, the whole TW crew has been seriously so amazing about this whole thing so far, it's kinda astonishing. Idk tho, I think it's just that we're already seeing those stupid petition things and just borderline harassment of Davis that makes me really uncomfortable about the whole thing. As I replied above, maybe I'm just waiting for the shoe to drop and everyone involved to snap and the inevitable backlash to ruin everything. Hopefully that's no the case. And hopefully whichever MTV intern signed up for the job knows what they're getting into lol.

And jfc One Direction should be a cautionary fucking tale to people not to bring RPF into the light of day. I want to crawl under my carpet and die of embarrassment for everyone involved while that shit's going on.

This article (http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/71386358.html) describes it well, and there is a lot more stuff in the comments. Harry/Louis tinhatters believe that their relationship is covered up by "management" and so they always talk about how much they hate management and Louis' "beard" Eleanor. They are always harassing the boys, Eleanor, and even their family members about Larry Stylinson being "real". I started out liking the Harry/Louis pairing, and I still sort of do and will read fic of it, but the disgustingness of the fandom has ruined much of the ship's appeal to me :\

RPF needs to stay up. I know people sent a link to the tumblr that ships Josh Dallas and Ginnier Goodwin (of Once Upon a Time) to them, and while they ended up being a couple anyways it was still some crazy secondhand embarrassment. But then they tag their tweets with their fandom couple name (Gosh) so I don't even know anymore.
