Precedent in one state in America, and that's just an interpretation of the current statute, which the legislature could decide to change at any time. And just because the circumstances in one case ended up that way, doesn't mean a person couldn't be charged another way. If you recall, I did suggest a safer way to report something, but go ahead and be bothered by the mean lady ruining your righteous idealism with pesky facts.

Sure, and you keep being needlessly pessimist and jumping to take everything personally in your every comment when people disagree with you.

Looking at your track record in this community, I don't know why I was surprised.

'Be careful you don't end up as a registered sex offender prosecuted for possession of child porn because that's a real risk" = "needlessly pessimistic?"

Oookaaaay... you just... go ahead with your special brand of optimism, them. Good luck with that.

But...her way isn't like super-complicated.

If you feel morally obliged to report something, then surely, 15 minutes of time at a cyber café with a fake address is not too much of an inconvenience.

They're not being needlessly pessimistic. They're being realistic.

Report shit that should be reported, but protect yourself when you do so. Seems sensible to me.

Regardless of their track record, visp has a pretty good understanding of how hard the average US state cracks down on child pornography and what is and isn't a binding precedent. If you want to take the moral high ground, you should be aware that there are certain risks and that a ruling in New York does not in any way keep you out of jail in, say, Oregon.
