so i've never used tumblr. and i want to. but i'm retarded and can't really figure out how to navigate it. how do i find blogs i might like? do i just search with tags or something?

tags are usually the way to start, but the system for searching them kinda sucks balls because you can't do multiple tags at a time.

it might help to just search "(name of thing you like) + tumblr" on google rather than slogging through a shitload of tagged posts.

You know, if you're into art or a certain fandom, I would recommend you check out the blogs of popular artists you like and start by following those if you like them, then check out the blogs the artist regularly reblogs from.

Or check if some website you like has a tumblr account. For example, Cracked has an official tumblr and their writers do too, and they reblog interesting stuff.

If you do search a fandom tag, I'd recommend you go to the blog of the people who post decent personal opinions in the tag.

oh anon, this won't please you, but the truth is that tumblr is not designed very well, and it definitely does not have navigation in mind beyond "oh look this is new great"

finding old stuff and the like is all but impossible

What did you want to use it for? To make your own posts, or just to follow things?

Browse tags of what you're interested in, check out the blogs of people posting in that tag, and check out if they've been blogging or reblogging anything else of interest. Unless you already know exactly who or what you're looking for, tumblr navigation is a sticky mess of wikipedia and tv trope serendipity.

fuckyeah___/fyeah/fy tumblrs that reblog specific fandom material are generally okay to start off with if you're looking for an active dashboard, or to know what's currently going on.

tumblr navigation is shit. actually a lot about tumblr is shit. but for blogs you like, do you have friends with similar interests who use it? ask them for recs. those blogs will probably reblog from other blogs you'll want to follow. eventually you accumulate a nice cluster of blogs to follow (at least that's how i've done it. i never actually go digging through tags)
even if you dont have friends you can just ask strangers (like us) and i'm sure you'll find some good recs.

oh and if you want to follow cat blogs, i have... roughly a dozen i'm following that i could recommend.
