Losing a grasp on fandom

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just curious, for those of you who have full time jobs and lots of interests outside of fandom, how active are you within it? I used to participate a lot, commenting, making icons etc, but since I turned 21 or so and my life has become increasingly busy and future-oriented, I barely have time to passively observe. It's kind of depressing, and I really miss it. But I don't know how to make time for it. I feel like I should just let it go but it's been such a huge part of my life, so I'm trying to hang on.

Has anybody else experienced this?

I just graduated college and fell into my first full-time job in my field, and I'm busy. Really busy. But that being said, I still participate in fandom a fair bit; they don't like us to work overtime so that we can stay "on salary" so that means that I tend to work long days four days a week and then have a half day or no day on Friday. There is no homework, I can pay all my bills easily, I can buy fannish things and see movies when I want, and it's fantastic.

A job doesn't have to be the end of the world even if it's a consuming job, imo.

I've been feeling that way lately, but I'm actually grateful for it. Previously, I think I was over-invested in fandom, which led to letting people treat me badly, or dwelling on negative things more than I should have. Now if I see someone bashing my favourite character/pairing/whatever, I'll just roll my eyes and block their ass rather than feeling hurt, and if a RP partner is pestering me to play uncomfortable scenes, I'll tell them no, I've got better things to be doing. So I feel like being busier IRL has made my fandom experience healthier too, even if it's more limited now.

I've never been one to make icons/graphics or write fic or draw art anyway, so even when I'm busy I still have time to look at and read stuff if the mood strikes me. When I'm more involved I get more into fandom discussions than anything else.

Yes and no.

I haven't had a full time job yet, so I'm not sure how much that will change things. But I've found that with school, I definitely have less time to devote to fandom, but I often use the time I have more productively.

When it comes down to it, I think you just have to prioritize when it comes to your free time. Like, I used to watch a lot more TV. But these days, aside from watching a couple shows that I watch regularly, I'm not all that interested in sitting down to watch something. I watch stuff online more because of the flexibility. The time I could spend watching TV, I usually spend on writing and fandom stuff.

But I'm also pretty introverted, and I get overstimulated easily, so fandom is a nice hobby to have. If I loved going out with friends every night, I would probably do that more, instead. But I like having some quiet hobbies I can enjoy at home. So there isn't a lot of conflict.
