brightblueink: Mawata from Pretear looking unamused. (Not amused.)

Aaaaactually it is. Identifying with a character doesn't mean you think you ARE the character, or something. Not typically, anyway.

I'd say empathizing = identifying. Sympathizing not exactly.
brightblueink: Goh giving Mannen a noogie (Pretear). (Noogie)

Actually, yeah, that's a probably good distinction to make. Like "identifying" might be something like a "I know that feel" sort of thing?

I think that's putting it very well. I think the only time I ever felt like I was being in the character's shoes was video games (esp. stuff like Portal, ME or DA).

Yeah, this.

There are lots of characters I sympathize with that I don't identify with; I just get where they are coming from because the story makes it clear or that actor is really good.

But there are some characters out there where I'm just like "yes, I know exactly how you are feeling/thinking, because that's how I feel/think in the same kind of situation."

Oh, okay. Like I said, I wasn't sure. :)

Yeah. ^^; Sorry if I seemed harsh?

No worries! I've always been a bit confused about that particular term, and at least now I know what's what.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. Identifying with a character would be "I am just like/similar to that character!" whereas empathizing with would be more "I feel for that character."

I sympathize or empathize with a lot of characters, but I definitely have never identified as or with any.
brightblueink: The Illusive Man from Mass Effect 2 smoking and looking out at a gas planet. (T.I.M.)

"I'm similar to that character" doesn't mean "wearing the character's skin" though, that's just creepy. I can identify with a character that says "I hate change!" because I feel the same way (to quote a character I recently identified with), but that doesn't mean I literally think I am that character and am ~*~within that world~*~ or something.

I think empathize generally means you understand how a character feels because you've had similar experiences, too. That's how I've heard it explained before, anyway.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say anything about "wearing the character's skin"? Maybe it's because I haven't had enough sleep, but I'm kind of confused by your whole first paragraph.

Empathize, exactly. Empathy is "is the capacity to recognize feelings that are being experienced by" someone else. Not necessarily because you've had similar experiences. I don't believe it's the same as identifying with, which is what you were saying in the post I replied to.
brightblueink: The Witch from Into the Woods looking boredly examining a nail. (This better be worth my time...)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-08-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
The secret used that term. "Inserting yourself into the skin of that character."

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Gotcha.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, empathy is the ability to feel the same emotion because you've experienced it before. Sympathy is being able to recognise an emotion and express it even if you haven't experienced it specifically yourself. So technically if you are empathising with someone then you are identifying with them at least a little. That doesn't mean you have to consider yourself identifying with the whole character, just aspects.

We had a whole sustainability class on the difference between sympathy and empathy XP

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-28 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Different classes, different definitions. In my classes we discussed specifically how you need not experience the emotion to identify it, and thus empathize with it. I think it's one of those subjective topics that can have varieties of understanding - like every humanities topic ever. Which I guess the same can be said for how one defines "identifying with" a character.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. You can empathize with a person with no experience on the emotion. Like for example, someone loses a child to sickness (I'm going to the assumption that you haven't lost a child before, excuse me if you have), you can empathize with that person without actually having to experience it. All you know that they are in pain and the worst loss a human can experience.

Empathy is a very broad emotional capacity. You don't feel to experience a certain emotion or situation to be empathetic to someone although you could.
