Just that whole mentality that AO3 is only for "good" fics. I always struggle with the stuff I write -- feeling like it might actually be crap, or thinking the characters are OOC, or worrying that I messed up the spelling and/or grammar somewhere, etc. So I feel like it's better if I just stay the hell away, and don't ruin the place for others.

I realize that's a dumb way of thinking (especially since my own motto is that there is no bad fics -- every story out there has at least one person who can enjoy it), but I can't help it. I'm an idiot like that, in RL too.

I don't know where that mentality comes from... and I know I've seen just as many fics I consider to be OOC or that have all the other issues that annoy me on AO3 as any other archive.

Yeah, it's the same for me too -- there's just as many fics there that doesn't work for me personally, as there is everywhere else. But still, that elitist mentality seems to be pretty prevalent. I've seen a couple of secrets about it now, not to mention random comments and stuff.

The assumption that ao3 is only for high quality work is stupid to begin with, especially the content proved otherwise even way back when (because it's subjective).

If anything, I'm more likely to read a fic, terrible or otherwise, if it's on ao3 because I prefer the tags and options for how I want to read it (ebook, entire work on one page, etc.). Sites like ff.net, or personal site archives, tend to be an eyesore.

That's actually my only real reason for preferring AO3, too. The tags and options and such, I mean. (That and there's more Homestuck fic, I guess.) Makes life a lot easier.

I remember looking up Homestuck on fanfiction.net and being bewildered by the small number of fics.

Turns out they were all in AO3 and the kink meme!

If you worry about those things, the odds that your fic is seen as actual badfic are pretty small. So post away.
